How to use the CPM calculator
Start with figures from one period or campaign. The CPM calculator uses Total ad spend and Total impressions to show cost per 1,000 impressions, cost per single impression, the formula, and the assumptions behind the result. Add Target CPM - optional when you want to compare the calculated CPM with a target.
- Select Currency to label the result. The selection does not convert the amount.
- Select Period and make sure the spend and impressions cover that period or campaign total.
- Enter Total ad spend as a number of 0 or more.
- Enter Total impressions as a number greater than 0.
- Enter Target CPM - optional if you want the comparison.
- Select Calculate CPM. Blank, invalid, negative, or zero-impression input shows an error and hides the result.
How the CPM calculation works
The calculator applies CPM = (Total ad spend / Total impressions) × 1,000. It also divides Total ad spend by Total impressions for the cost per single impression. The assumptions table then lists the selected period, currency, entered values, and calculated values.
Total ad spend: $850
Total impressions: 250,000
CPM: ($850 / 250,000) × 1,000 = $3.40
Cost per single impression: $0.0034
Total ad spend may be 0. Total impressions must be greater than 0. Currency and Period label the result, so changing either selection leaves the arithmetic unchanged.
What Target CPM changes
Leave Target CPM - optional blank when you only need the calculated CPM. When you enter a value of 0 or more, the result shows the difference per 1,000 impressions and the related difference in total spend for the entered impression volume.
The warning appears when the absolute CPM gap is greater than 0.0005. A gap at or below that value produces no warning. The comparison uses the figures you enter and does not retrieve a rate or advertising account data.
CPM calculator limits and result handling
The calculator does not convert currencies or align figures from different periods. It also does not add platform fees as a separate value. Include a fee in Total ad spend if that fee belongs in the amount you want to measure. Clicks, conversions, viewability, and ad fraud are outside the formula.
Select Copy result for the plain-text summary, or select Download result (.txt) to save it as a text file. If copying fails, the result text becomes selectable so you can copy it manually. Select Reset to restore USD and Monthly, clear the inputs and messages, and hide the result.
The page script processes the calculator values in the browser and makes no network request with those figures. The calculator does not connect to an advertising platform or retrieve live rates.
When to use the CPM result
- Check a monthly media report by entering the ad spend and impression total for that month, then save the downloaded CPM summary with the report.
- Compare a campaign's current CPM with a planned Target CPM - optional and review the total-spend gap at the campaign's impression volume.
- Copy the CPM, single-impression cost, formula, and assumptions into a budget note.
CPM vs CPC and other business calculators
Use this calculator when the inputs are advertising spend and impressions. The CPC Calculator uses spend and clicks, while the CTR Calculator divides clicks by impressions. Choose the Marketing Metrics Calculator when you need CPM with other campaign metrics, or browse Business Calculators for other business figures.
Frequently asked questions
How do I calculate CPM from ad spend and impressions?
Divide Total ad spend by Total impressions, then multiply by 1,000. The calculator also shows cost per single impression and the intermediate values used.
Can I calculate CPM with zero impressions?
No. Total impressions must be greater than 0 because the formula divides by that value. Total ad spend may be 0 or more.
What does Target CPM - optional show?
It compares your calculated CPM with the target you enter and shows the gap per 1,000 impressions plus the corresponding total-spend gap at your impression volume. Leave it blank to skip the comparison.
Does the CPM calculator use live advertising data?
No. It calculates from the Total ad spend and Total impressions values you enter, with no advertising-platform connection or live-rate lookup.
