SaaS Rule of 40 Calculator

Enter your year-over-year revenue growth rate and a profit margin to calculate the Rule of 40 score used to balance SaaS growth against profitability. The formula, every assumption, and intermediate values are shown alongside the result.

Percentage increase in revenue vs. the same period one year ago. Use trailing twelve months (TTM) or most recent fiscal year for best results.

Enter as a percentage of revenue. Negative values are allowed for companies operating at a loss.

Label only - use whichever margin figure you have. Be consistent across comparisons.

How to use the SaaS Rule of 40 Calculator

Enter the two percentages, choose the label that matches the margin figure, and click Calculate Rule of 40. The result shows the score, its status against the 40% benchmark, the formula, and the assumptions used. You can then copy the plain-text result or download it as a .txt file.

  1. Enter a percentage in Revenue growth rate (year-over-year, %).
  2. Enter a percentage in Profit margin (%).
  3. Choose a label in Margin type: EBITDA margin, Free cash flow margin, Operating margin, or Net profit margin.
  4. Click Calculate Rule of 40.
  5. Review the score, then choose Copy result or Download result (.txt). Use Reset to clear the inputs and result.

How the Rule of 40 score calculator adds your inputs

The calculator adds Revenue growth rate and Profit margin as percentage points. Margin type labels the number you entered; it does not convert the figure into another margin measure. For example:

Revenue growth rate: 35%
Profit margin: 10%
Rule of 40 score: 45.00%
Result: Pass

A score of 40% or higher is labeled Pass. A lower score is labeled Below 40. The assumptions table lists the growth rate, selected margin, score, 40% threshold, and the benchmark check.

Which margin to use for the SaaS Rule of 40

Select EBITDA margin, Free cash flow margin, Operating margin, or Net profit margin to identify the figure in Profit margin (%). The selection is a label only, so changing it does not alter the score. Changing either numeric field or Margin type hides the current result until you calculate again.

SaaS Rule of 40 input limits and validation

Revenue growth rate must be at least -100%. Profit margin must be between -1000% and 100%. Both numeric fields are required, and negative profit margins are accepted. A missing, invalid, or non-finite value stops the calculation, hides the result, and displays an error message.

The script adds only the values you enter. It does not retrieve company records, filings, live rates, or other external data. The calculation runs in the browser, and the script makes no network request with these inputs.

What the result contains

After a valid calculation, Copy result copies the generated text. Download result (.txt) creates a text file named rule-of-40-calculator-result.txt. The text includes the entered growth rate, selected margin, formula, score, and benchmark check.

If copying fails, the calculator shows and selects the result text so you can copy it manually. Reset clears both numeric fields, returns Margin type to EBITDA margin, and hides the current result.

When another business calculator fits better

Use the ARR Calculator when the task is turning recurring revenue and a billing period into annual recurring revenue. Choose the SaaS Metrics Calculator when you need several SaaS measures, such as MRR, ARR, churn, burn, runway, and Rule of 40, from one period of data. For revenue and direct cost, the Gross Margin Calculator is the better match. Other calculation types are grouped under Business Calculators.

Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate the SaaS Rule of 40 score?
