How to use the GPA calculator
Enter a course name, choose its Grade, and enter its Credit hours. The calculator converts the grades to a term GPA on the standard unweighted 4.0 scale. Add Prior cumulative GPA (optional) and Prior total credit hours (optional) to include earlier coursework in a cumulative GPA.
- Enter each course's name, choose its Grade, and enter its Credit hours. The table starts with Course 1, Course 2, and Course 3.
- Select Add course for another row. The new row starts with grade A and blank course and credit-hour fields.
- Fill in both Prior cumulative GPA (optional) and Prior total credit hours (optional) to include earlier coursework. Leave both blank for the current term only.
- Select Calculate to show the GPA and the values used in the calculation. Select Reset to restore the three sample rows and clear the prior fields.
- After a valid calculation, select Copy result or Download result (.txt) to keep the text summary.
How term GPA is calculated
Each letter grade maps to grade points. The calculator multiplies those points by the course's Credit hours, adds the quality points, and divides by the total Credit hours.
Course 1: A (4.0) x 3 credits = 12.00 quality points
Course 2: B+ (3.3) x 4 credits = 13.20 quality points
Course 3: B (3.0) x 3 credits = 9.00 quality points
Term GPA: 34.20 / 10.00 = 3.42
When you enter prior values, the calculator adds prior quality points to the term totals. With a prior GPA of 3.45 and 60 prior credit hours, the cumulative calculation is (34.20 + 3.45 x 60) / (10 + 60) = 3.45.
Which grades and credit hours can I enter?
The Grade menu accepts A+, A, A-, B+, B, B-, C+, C, C-, D+, D, D-, and F. The unweighted mapping is A+/A 4.0, A- 3.7, B+ 3.3, B 3.0, B- 2.7, C+ 2.3, C 2.0, C- 1.7, D+ 1.3, D 1.0, D- 0.7, and F 0.0.
Each included course needs Credit hours greater than 0. The input uses a 0.5 step. Prior cumulative GPA must be between 0 and 4.0, and Prior total credit hours must be 0 or higher. Enter the two prior fields together.
How blank rows and invalid input are handled
A row with both a blank course name and blank Credit hours is ignored. If a row has Credit hours but no name, the result labels it Course 1, Course 2, or the next applicable course number. Blank, non-numeric, or non-positive Credit hours stop the calculation and hide the previous result.
Remove course deletes a row when more than one row remains. With one row left, it clears the name and Credit hours and resets the Grade to A. The calculation uses the unweighted scale, so it does not add points for honors, AP, or IB courses.
How to check a term or cumulative GPA
For a term check, enter the courses and select Calculate. Review each course's quality points beside the term GPA, then copy or download the result. To include earlier coursework, enter the prior GPA and completed credit hours together.
Compare the result with your institution's grading policy before treating it as official. The calculator uses the values you enter and does not produce an official transcript.
When another education calculator fits
Use Education Calculators to choose among the education pages. Choose Final Grade Calculator for the final exam score needed for a target course grade. Choose Weighted Grade Calculator when you have assignment scores and weights instead of course-level grades.
Frequently asked questions
How do I calculate my cumulative GPA?
Enter both Prior cumulative GPA (optional) and Prior total credit hours (optional), then select Calculate. The calculator multiplies the prior GPA by the prior credit hours, adds the current term's quality points, and divides by the combined credit hours.
Does this GPA calculator use a 4.0 scale?
Yes. It uses the standard unweighted 4.0 scale coded in the calculator. Plus and minus grades have the listed point values, with A+ and A both worth 4.0.
Can I calculate a term GPA without prior credits?
Yes. Leave both optional prior fields blank, then select Calculate to show the term GPA and term credit hours. Entering only one prior field produces a validation error.
Does the GPA calculator handle weighted honors or AP grades?
No. It calculates an unweighted GPA and does not add extra points for honors, AP, or IB courses.
