Weighted Grade Calculator

Enter each graded item's score and weight to calculate your overall weighted course grade. See the formula, every item's contribution, and a copyable or downloadable result.

Edit the cutoffs below to match your own school's scale. Each row is the minimum percentage needed for that letter.

Letter-grade scale

Letter Minimum % for this letter

Graded items

Add every graded item with its score and weight. Weights do not need to sum to 100 - the result is normalized by the total weight entered.

How to use the weighted grade calculator

Start with the letter-grade scale, then enter each graded item's Score (%) and Weight. Calculate shows the weighted course grade, the letter grade, the formula, and each item's contribution. The displayed letter follows the cutoffs in the table.

  1. Change the letter-grade scale if your course uses different cutoffs.
  2. Enter an optional Item name, a Score (%), and a Weight for every graded item.
  3. Select Calculate to display the grade, formula, totals, and item contributions.
  4. Use Copy result or Download result (.txt) to keep the plain-text calculation.

How to calculate a weighted course grade

The calculator multiplies each score by its Weight, adds those products, and divides by the sum of the weights. A total of 100 is not required. The result uses the relative size of each Weight.

Item 1: score 70%, weight 40
Item 2: score 90%, weight 60
Weighted course grade: 82.00%

Item 2 has the larger effect because its Weight is 60. The result lists each score-times-weight contribution, the sum of the weights, the weighted course grade, and the selected letter grade.

What to enter for a weighted grade calculation

The page starts with three blank graded-item rows. Select Add item for another row. If Item name is blank, the calculator labels the row Item 1, Item 2, and so on. Score (%) must be 0 or higher, and Weight must be greater than 0.

  • A completely blank row is ignored. A partly filled row must pass validation.
  • The calculator checks that Score (%) is numeric and at least 0. It does not set a maximum score.
  • The calculator checks that Weight is numeric and greater than 0.
  • At least one completed graded item is required before Calculate can show a result.

How to change the letter-grade scale

The default scale has A at 90, B at 80, C at 70, D at 60, and F at 0. Each row needs a label and a minimum percentage between 0 and 100. Keep at least one row. Use Add row, Remove letter-grade row, or Reset to default scale to edit the table.

Before assigning a letter, the calculator sorts the rows by minimum percentage. It chooses the highest cutoff reached by the weighted course grade. If the grade reaches none of the cutoffs, it uses the lowest row.

What Calculate, Reset, and Copy result do

Calculate shows the weighted course grade, letter grade, formula, item contributions, sum of the score-times-weight products, and sum of the weights. Copy result places the plain-text summary on the clipboard when access works. If copying fails, the text becomes visible for manual copying. Download result (.txt) creates a text file.

Reset clears the graded-item rows, hides the result, and keeps the current scale. Remove graded item deletes a row when more than one row is present. The calculation uses the values you enter.

Where weighted grade calculations come up

Enter quiz, midterm, and project scores as separate graded items when each one has its own Weight. Download result (.txt) saves the displayed breakdown as plain text.

An instructor can enter a grading scheme, review the formula and totals, then use Copy result to keep the calculation.

Choose a calculator for the next grade question

Use Education Calculators for other grade and study-planning tasks. Choose the Final Grade Calculator for a target course grade, the Grade Calculator for test scores, missed questions, or attendance, and the GPA Calculator for GPA from course grades and credit hours.

The calculation does not apply a curve, extra credit, dropped scores, instructor rounding, or a school policy. Include any adjustment in the scores or weights you enter.

Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate a weighted course grade?

Enter each Score (%) and Weight, then select Calculate. The result is the sum of score times Weight divided by the sum of Weight values.

Do weighted grade calculator weights need to add up to 100?

No. The calculator divides by the total Weight. Totals of 100 and 60 produce the same result when their relative proportions match.

Can I change the weighted grade letter scale?

Yes. Edit each label and minimum percentage, then use Calculate. Add row creates a cutoff, Remove letter-grade row deletes one, and Reset to default scale restores the default rows.

What happens when a weighted grade row is blank?

A completely blank row is ignored. A partly filled row needs a numeric Score (%) of at least 0 and a Weight greater than 0, or Calculate shows an error.

Can a weighted grade calculator find my needed final exam score?

No. This calculator calculates the grade from scores you enter. Use the Final Grade Calculator to solve for an exam score needed to reach a target.
