Enter the grades and target
Start with one completed graded item. Enter its Item name, Score (%), and Weight (%), then enter Final exam weight (%) and Target overall grade (%). After Calculate, the result shows the current weighted score, the required final exam score, the formula, and the assumptions used.
- Enter an Item name, Score (%), and Weight (%) for each graded item.
- Click Add item to create another graded-item row.
- Enter Final exam weight (%) and Target overall grade (%).
- Click Calculate to show the required score and supporting values.
How the required score is calculated
Each graded item contributes its score multiplied by its weight, divided by 100. The calculator adds those contributions, subtracts the total from your target, and divides by the final exam weight as a decimal. The item weights and final exam weight must account for the whole course.
Current weighted score = Sum of (Item score x Item weight / 100)
Required final score = (Target grade - Current weighted score) / (Final exam weight / 100)
Assignments: 88% x 20%
Midterm: 82% x 25%
Quizzes: 95% x 10%
Final exam weight: 45%
Target overall grade: 85%
Current weighted score: 47.60%
Required final exam score: 83.11%
Status: Achievable
Read the result status
Required final exam score is the uncapped value from the formula. Status is Achievable when that value is above 0% and at or below 100%. Already secured appears at 0% or below. Not achievable appears above 100%, and the uncapped value remains visible.
Formula used lists each item's contribution, the item-weight total, the final exam weight, the target, and the uncapped required score.
What the inputs accept
Calculation requires at least one completed graded item. Scores and Target overall grade (%) must be between 0 and 100. Item weights and Final exam weight (%) must be greater than 0 and no more than 100. Their combined total must equal 100%, within 0.05 percentage points.
A completely blank row is ignored. A partly filled row causes an error. A valid row without an Item name becomes Item 1, Item 2, and so on. Click Reset to restore the sample rows and clear the course fields.
- It uses percentage inputs and linear weighted averaging.
- It does not apply curves, extra credit, dropped scores, letter-grade cutoffs, or school-specific rounding rules.
Copy or download the result
After Calculate, click Copy result for the plain-text summary or Download result (.txt) to save final-grade-calculator-result.txt. If Copy result cannot complete, select the text in the result box and copy it manually.
The calculation uses the values entered on the page. The page code does not fetch school, course, or gradebook records.
Check a target before the final exam
The sample rows use Assignments, Midterm, and Quizzes. Replace those values with the graded categories in your course, then compare Required final exam score with Target overall grade (%).

Frequently asked questions
How do I calculate the final exam score I need?
Enter the graded items, weights, Final exam weight (%), and Target overall grade (%), then click Calculate. The calculator subtracts the current weighted score from the target and divides by the final exam weight as a decimal.
What if my required final exam score is over 100%?
The target is Not achievable with the entered grades and weights, even with a 100% final exam score. The uncapped required score remains visible.
Can the target grade already be secured before the final?
Yes. A required score of 0% or below gives the status Already secured, based on the entered values and weights.
Do the item weights and final exam weight have to equal 100%?
Yes. Their total must be 100%, within 0.05 percentage points, or the calculator shows an error.
Does the Final Grade Calculator use my school's grading policy?
It uses your numbers and does not fetch records or apply curves, extra credit, dropped scores, letter-grade cutoffs, or school-specific rounding.
