How to calculate a tip with the Tip Calculator
Start with the amount shown in Bill amount ($). Pick a preset under Tip percentage or type your own value, then choose how Tax amount ($, optional) affects the tip base. The result shows the tip, total bill, formula, and assumptions. You can also split those amounts between people.
- Enter a value greater than 0 in Bill amount ($), up to 1,000,000.
- Enter Tax amount ($, optional) as 0 or more, up to the Bill amount ($).
- Choose 10%, 15%, 18%, 20%, or 25%, or type a Tip percentage from 0 through 100.
- Under Tip calculated on, choose Bill amount before tax or Bill amount including tax.
- Enter a whole number in Split between (people, optional) if needed, choose Round total up to the next whole dollar if needed, and select Calculate.
How to calculate tip before or after tax
Bill amount ($) is the full amount entered. Bill amount before tax subtracts Tax amount ($, optional) before applying Tip percentage. Bill amount including tax applies the percentage to the full bill. Leaving Tax amount ($, optional) blank makes its value zero.
For an $85.50 bill with $6.50 tax and an 18% tip, Bill amount before tax uses $79.00 as the base:
Tip base = $85.50 - $6.50 = $79.00
Tip amount = $79.00 x 18% = $14.22
Total bill = $85.50 + $14.22 = $99.72
How to split a restaurant bill evenly
Leave Split between (people, optional) blank for one person. Enter a whole number from 1 to 100 to show Tip per person and Total per person. The calculator divides the calculated tip and total by that number, so the split is even and does not reflect different orders.
With the example above and 4 people, the displayed figures are:
Tip per person = $14.22 / 4 = $3.56
Total per person = $99.72 / 4 = $24.93
How rounding and result downloads work
Round total up to the next whole dollar applies Math.ceil after the tip calculation. The displayed tip becomes the rounded total minus Bill amount ($). For an $85.50 bill at 18% with no tax, the unrounded total is $100.89; rounding changes the total to $101.00 and the displayed tip to $15.50.
After Calculate, the result shows the tip amount and total bill. Per-person figures appear when the count is greater than 1. Copy result puts a plain-text summary on the clipboard, while Download result (.txt) saves it as a text file. Tax details appear when tax is greater than zero, people details when the count is greater than 1, and currency values use two decimal places.

Frequently asked questions
How do I calculate a tip on a bill with tax?
Enter the bill in Bill amount ($), the tax in Tax amount ($, optional), and choose a value under Tip calculated on. Bill amount before tax subtracts tax from the tip base; Bill amount including tax uses the full bill.
Should I use Bill amount before tax or Bill amount including tax?
Choose Bill amount before tax to apply the percentage to the bill minus the tax entered. Choose Bill amount including tax to apply it to the full bill.
How do I split a restaurant bill between people?
Enter a whole number in Split between (people, optional) and select Calculate. The calculator divides the tip and total bill evenly when the count is greater than 1.
How does Round total up to the next whole dollar work?
It rounds the calculated total up with Math.ceil, then sets the displayed tip to that rounded total minus Bill amount ($). This can change the percentage-based tip.
Can I copy or download a tip calculator result?
Yes, Copy result copies a plain-text summary and Download result (.txt) saves it as a text file. Tax details appear only when tax is greater than zero; people details appear when the count is greater than 1.
