How stacked discounts change the sale price
A percentage discount is calculated from the original price. A fixed discount subtracts the entered dollar amount. The optional second discount is always a percentage and applies after the first discount. Sales tax is added after any discounts.
Original price: $100.00
Discount 1: 20%
Second discount: 10%
Sales tax rate: 7%
Final price per item: $77.04
Effective discount: 28.00%
The first discount changes $100.00 to $80.00. The second changes that price to $72.00, and the $5.04 tax is calculated on $72.00. Savings and effective discount are shown before tax; the final price includes tax.
Discount calculator inputs and limits
Leave the second discount or sales tax blank and the calculator uses 0. Leave Quantity blank and it uses 1. A quantity greater than 1 adds total original price, total saved, total tax, and total final price. Change an input after calculating and the result is cleared; click Calculate again to refresh it.
Original price must be greater than 0 and at most 10,000,000. Discount values must be 0 or greater. A percentage discount can reach 100, while a fixed discount cannot exceed the original price. The second discount accepts 0 to 100 percent, sales tax accepts 0 to 50 percent, and Quantity accepts whole numbers from 1 to 10,000. Money and percentages display with two decimal places. The inputs do not include coupons, shipping, loyalty pricing, or retailer-specific rounding.

Frequently asked questions
How do I calculate sale price from a discount?
Enter the original price, choose Percentage off (%) or Fixed amount off ($), enter the Discount value, and click Calculate. Percentage off (%) calculates the discount from the original price. Fixed amount off ($) subtracts the entered dollar amount.
How are stacked discounts calculated?
Stacked discounts are applied one after the other. For example, 20% followed by 10% leaves 72% of the original price, so the effective discount is 28%.
Does the discount calculator add sales tax?
Yes, an entered Sales tax rate (%, optional) is applied after all discounts. The tax amount is shown per item, and quantity totals include total tax when Quantity is greater than 1.
What does effective discount mean?
Effective discount is the percentage saved from the original price after the entered discounts are applied and before tax. With 20% followed by 10%, the effective discount is 28% because the second percentage applies after the first.
