How to use the VAT / Sales Tax Calculator
Start by identifying what your amount already includes. Choose Add tax to a net price for a price before tax, or choose Extract tax from a gross price for a total that already includes tax. The result shows the net price, tax amount, and gross price for one item, with totals added when you enter a quantity.
- Choose Add tax to a net price or Extract tax from a gross price under What are you calculating?
- Enter the before-tax value in Net price, before tax ($), or the tax-included value in Gross price, tax included ($).
- Enter the percentage in Tax rate (%).
- Enter a whole-number Quantity (optional), or leave it blank to use 1.
- Click Calculate to show the result. Use Reset to clear the inputs and hide it.
How the two calculation modes use the amount
Add tax to a net price uses the entered amount as the pre-tax price. The calculator multiplies it by the tax rate divided by 100, then adds that tax to get the gross price. Extract tax from a gross price uses the entered amount as the tax-included price. It divides the gross price by 1 plus the rate divided by 100, then finds the tax by subtracting the net price from the gross price.
Mode: Add tax to a net price
Net price, before tax ($): 100
Tax rate (%): 20
Quantity (optional): 1
Price excl. tax (per item): $100.00
Tax amount (per item): $20.00
Price incl. tax (per item): $120.00
The result includes the formula and an assumptions table. The table lists the mode, amount entered, tax rate, and per-item values. Money is displayed and exported in USD with two decimal places.
What Quantity (optional) changes
A blank Quantity (optional) uses 1. Entering a quantity greater than 1 keeps the per-item figures and adds the total gross price to the result. The assumptions table and the downloadable summary also include total net price, total tax, and total gross price.
Copy result copies the plain-text summary. Download result (.txt) saves that summary as a text file.
VAT / Sales Tax Calculator limits
The amount must be greater than 0 and no more than 100,000,000. Tax rate (%) accepts values from 0 through 100. If entered, Quantity (optional) must be a whole number from 1 through 10,000. The calculator applies one rate to the full amount.
The calculator does not select a live rate or account for reduced rates, exemptions, multiple jurisdictions, multi-stage VAT, or retailer-specific rounding rules. Check the rate and final amount against the relevant tax authority or receipt.
Where this comes up
- A shop owner has a price before VAT and needs the customer-facing total, so they choose Add tax to a net price and enter the applicable rate.
- A buyer has a receipt total and wants to separate the tax portion, so they choose Extract tax from a gross price.
- A seller is checking an order with repeated items, so they enter Quantity (optional) and compare the per-item figures with the order totals.
When another financial calculator fits better
Use Discount Calculator when the task starts with one or two discounts and may then add sales tax. Use Commission Calculator when you need sales, quota, or tiered commission rules instead of a tax percentage. The broader Financial Calculators category covers loans, pay, debt, investing, housing, and savings calculations.
Frequently asked questions
How do I add VAT or sales tax to a price?
Choose Add tax to a net price, enter Net price, before tax ($) and Tax rate (%), then select Calculate. The calculator returns the tax amount and price including tax.
How do I extract sales tax from a total price?
Choose Extract tax from a gross price, enter the total in Gross price, tax included ($), and enter Tax rate (%). The result separates the net price from the tax amount.
Can I use this as a tax included price calculator?
Yes. Choose Extract tax from a gross price when your entered amount already includes VAT or sales tax, then provide the rate used for that price.
What does Quantity (optional) do in the VAT calculator?
A blank field uses 1 item. A quantity greater than 1 adds totals for net price, tax, and gross price while retaining the per-item results.
