How to use the brine calculator
Set Solve for to Salt weight, Water amount, or Brine concentration. Enter the other two values, select their units, and click Calculate. The result shows converted water and salt values, total brine weight, concentration, Formula used, and the assumptions applied.
- Choose Salt weight, Water amount, or Brine concentration in Solve for.
- Fill in the other two fields, Water amount, Salt weight, and Target concentration (%).
- Select a water unit and a salt unit. The field selected in Solve for is disabled.
- Click Calculate, then read the result or use Copy result or Download result (.txt).
Calculate brine concentration by weight
The calculator divides Salt weight by the total brine weight, which is Salt weight plus Water amount after conversion to grams. It multiplies that fraction by 100 and labels the result percent by weight, or w/w. The other two equations solve for Salt weight or Water amount.
Concentration % (w/w) = Salt weight / (Salt weight + Water weight) x 100
Salt weight = Water weight x Concentration / (100 - Concentration)
Water weight = Salt weight x (100 - Concentration) / Concentration
With 1 L of water and 5.5 in Target concentration (%), the computed Salt weight is:
Water amount: 1 L
Target concentration (%): 5.5
Salt weight: 58.201 g
Brine salt and water calculator units
Water amount accepts grams (g), kilograms (kg), ounces (oz), pounds (lb), milliliters (mL), liters (L), cups, quarts (qt), and gallons (gal). The calculator converts every water value to grams; volume units use the 1 g/mL assumption. Salt weight accepts grams (g), kilograms (kg), ounces (oz), and pounds (lb).
- Choose a volume unit for Water amount when measuring liquid, or a weight unit when you have a scale reading.
- Enter Salt weight with a weight unit. The calculator does not convert salt volume because no salt density is applied.
- Select Brine concentration when the water and salt weights are known and you want to calculate the mixture percentage.
What the brine calculator accepts and rejects
To solve for Salt weight, enter Water amount greater than zero and Target concentration (%) greater than 0 and less than 100. To solve for Water amount, enter Salt weight greater than zero and a target in that same range. To solve for Brine concentration, Water amount must be greater than zero, while Salt weight can be zero. An invalid entry hides the result and shows an error.
Changing an input or selector hides the previous result until you click Calculate again. Reset restores 1 in Water amount with liters (L), 60 in Salt weight with grams (g), and 5.5 in Target concentration (%). Solve for returns to Salt weight.
Where brine calculations come up
Enter a measured Water amount and a target concentration to calculate Salt weight before mixing a batch. To check a prepared brine, enter its water and salt weights, choose Brine concentration, and read the calculated percentage.
Weight units also let you scale the arithmetic with a recipe. The calculator shows its formula and assumptions. It does not apply institutional, jurisdictional, curing, brining, or food-safety guidance.

Frequently asked questions
How do I calculate salt for a brine concentration?
Enter Water amount and Target concentration (%), choose Salt weight in Solve for, then click Calculate. The formula is Salt weight = Water weight x Concentration / (100 - Concentration).
How does the brine calculator find concentration?
It divides Salt weight by Salt weight plus Water amount after converting both to grams, then multiplies by 100. The displayed value is percent by weight of the total brine, written as w/w.
Can I use liters for water and grams for salt?
Yes. Water volume units are converted to weight with the 1 g/mL assumption, while Salt weight accepts grams, kilograms, ounces, or pounds.
Does this brine calculator give food-safety guidance?
No. It calculates the entered salt, water, and concentration values only; it does not apply a brining, curing, or food-safety guideline.
