How Hits and At-bats become batting average
The calculator uses Batting average = Hits / At-bats. It rounds the displayed value to three decimal places and removes the leading zero, following the display format used for baseball and softball averages.
With 30 hits in 100 at-bats, the displayed result is:
Hits: 30
At-bats: 100
Batting average: .300
What the input rules accept
Hits and At-bats must be whole numbers of 0 or more. At-bats must be greater than 0, and Hits cannot exceed At-bats. When an entry fails validation, the result stays hidden and an error message appears.
Standard at-bats exclude walks, hit-by-pitch, sacrifices, and catcher's interference. Enter the at-bat total that matches your source or league's definition. The calculator does not classify plate appearances, apply a league rulebook, or check player records.
What the result section contains
After a valid calculation, the result section shows the batting average, Hits, and At-bats as separate values. It also shows the formula and an assumptions table with the entered numbers and calculated average.
If a score sheet lists 87 Hits and 266 At-bats, enter those two values and copy the displayed calculation into a notes file. For softball, enter the at-bat total supplied by the league or scorekeeping system.
When another baseball calculator fits
For another sports calculation, open Sports Calculators for Stats, Golf, Racing & Training. The Baseball ERA Calculator uses earned runs and innings pitched in baseball notation. The Baseball WHIP Calculator uses walks, hits, and innings pitched. The Baseball Statistics Calculator includes batting average, slugging percentage, ERA, and WHIP.
The calculation runs in the browser using the numbers entered on the page. The page does not send those values to a server or fetch player, team, or league records.
Batting average questions
How do you calculate batting average from hits and at-bats?
Divide Hits by At-bats. For example, 30 Hits divided by 100 At-bats gives a displayed batting average of .300.
Why is batting average shown as .327 instead of 0.327?
Batting average is displayed to three decimal places without a leading zero. The calculator shows .327 instead of 0.327 while calculating from the same decimal value.
What should I enter for at-bats?
Enter a whole-number At-bats total greater than 0 that matches your source or league's definition. Standard at-bats exclude walks, hit-by-pitch, sacrifices, and catcher's interference.
Can I copy or download a batting average result?
