Golf Handicap Calculator

Enter the score, course rating, and slope rating for at least 3 rounds to get an unofficial handicap index estimate, with the formula and every round's differential shown before the result.

Handicap index estimate (unofficial)

Enter score, course rating, and slope rating for at least 3 rounds. This produces an unofficial estimate only - it does not submit anything, certify an official handicap, or look up any course.

How to use the golf handicap calculator

Start with at least three completed rounds. Enter Score, Course rating, and Slope rating for each one, confirm that you reviewed your local rules, then select an assumption. The result includes every round's differential and an unofficial handicap index estimate.

  1. Enter a whole-number value in the Score and Slope (55-155) fields. Enter a course rating between 55 and 80 in Course rating.
  2. Select WHS-style estimate (lowest differentials by round count, with low-round adjustment) or Simple average of all entered differentials under Handicap-system assumption.
  3. Check "I confirm I have reviewed my local club's or national handicap authority's actual rules, and understand this tool produces an unofficial estimate only using a simplified generic formula - not any specific organization's official system."
  4. Select Calculate estimate. The result shows the formula, each round's differential, and the index estimate.

How to calculate a golf handicap index

For each completed round, the calculator subtracts Course rating from Score, multiplies the difference by 113, and divides by Slope rating.

Score: 72
Course rating: 72.0
Slope rating: 113
Handicap differential: (72 - 72.0) x 113 / 113 = 0.0

The index estimate multiplies the average of the selected differentials by 0.96, then adds the low-round adjustment when the selected assumption includes one. The result lists the rounds entered, differentials used, and average.

What the Handicap-system assumption changes

  • WHS-style estimate (lowest differentials by round count, with low-round adjustment) sorts the completed rounds and selects the coded number of lowest differentials. With 3 rounds it uses 1 differential and applies -2. With 20 or more rounds it uses the 8 lowest and no adjustment.
  • Simple average of all entered differentials uses every completed differential and applies no low-round adjustment.

With more than 20 completed rounds, the WHS-style estimate uses the 20-round selection. Both choices are generic calculations, not a club or national handicap authority's official system.

Golf handicap calculator input rules

Enter at least 3 complete rounds. Score must be a whole number of 50 or more. Course rating must be between 55 and 80. Slope rating must be a whole number between 55 and 155.

A row with all three fields blank is skipped. A partly filled row shows an error. Complete it or select Remove round. Select Add round for another row. Reset clears the result, unchecks the rules confirmation, and restores three blank rows.

When to use this golf handicap calculator

  • Enter at least three scorecards when you have the course rating and slope rating for each round. The result shows the differential behind the estimate.
  • Compare WHS-style estimate (lowest differentials by round count, with low-round adjustment) with Simple average of all entered differentials.
  • After the estimate appears, select Copy result or Download result (.txt) to keep the displayed calculation as text.

Golf handicap calculator versus other sports calculators

Use this page for an unofficial handicap index estimate from scores, Course rating, and Slope rating. For a round summary with score relative to par, GIR%, fairway%, putts per hole, and a handicap estimate, use the Golf Calculator.

The Golf Score Calculator takes par and strokes hole by hole. The Bowling Average Calculator takes a list of bowling game scores. Other sports statistics and training tools are listed in Sports Calculators.

Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate a golf handicap index from scores?

Enter at least 3 complete rounds, check the rules confirmation, choose an assumption, and select Calculate estimate. The calculator finds each differential, averages the selected values, multiplies that average by 0.96, and applies the WHS-style adjustment when selected.

What is the golf handicap differential formula?

The formula is (Score - Course rating) × 113 ÷ Slope rating. The calculator shows the differential for every completed round before listing the estimate.

Can I use a golf handicap calculator with three rounds?

Yes. Three complete rounds is the minimum accepted by this calculator. A row with all fields blank is skipped. A partly completed row causes a validation error.

Does this golf handicap calculator look up course ratings?

You enter Course rating and Slope rating for each round. The calculator performs the arithmetic on those values, and the script does not access a course database or submit scores.

Is the golf handicap index estimate official?

The result is an unofficial estimate using the generic formula and selected assumption. It is not submitted to or verified by a club or handicap authority. Use that authority's official system when an official handicap is required.
