Video Preview Generator

Pick a frame from a local video and export it as a single image, poster, or thumbnail - or sample several frames into a contact sheet, storyboard, or compact thumbnail strip. Everything runs locally in your browser; nothing is uploaded.

How to use the video preview generator

Load a local video, choose a mode, and set the frame or timestamps you need. Video Preview Generator saves one frame as an image, poster, or thumbnail, or combines sampled frames into a Contact Sheet, Storyboard, or Thumbnail Strip.

  1. Drop a video here or click browse files.
  2. Choose Single Frame, Video Poster, Thumbnail, Contact Sheet, Storyboard, Thumbnail Strip, or Set Interval Extractor.
  3. Set the moment with the slider, Start, 25%, Middle, 75%, or End, the Nudge buttons, or a timestamp field.
  4. Choose Image format, then adjust Quality when JPEG or WebP is selected.
  5. Save the result with Download image, Download poster, Download thumbnail, Download, or Download ZIP.

How to extract a frame from a video

Single Frame keeps the source frame dimensions. Scrub the slider, choose Start, 25%, Middle, 75%, or End, then adjust the position with the Nudge buttons. Go to (min:sec:ms) accepts a timestamp. Approximate frame converts the entered frame number with a 30 FPS estimate.

Go to (min:sec:ms): 00:01:250
Approximate frame: 38
Result: frame at about 1.25 seconds

The preview updates after slider, jump, nudge, and Image format changes. PNG is lossless. JPEG and WebP show the Quality control. Download image saves the selected still.

How to make a video poster or thumbnail

Video Poster has Width and Height fields plus 1280x720, 1920x1080, and 1080x1080 presets. Keep source aspect ratio is checked by default. That setting draws the full frame into the canvas, so different proportions can stretch the image. Clear it to use a cover crop. Poster dimensions are clamped to 16 through 7680 pixels.

Thumbnail has 1280x720, 640x360, 320x180, and Square 512 presets, plus custom Width and Height. It always uses a cover crop, so the edges can leave the output. Choose the frame with the slider before downloading the thumbnail.

How to create a video contact sheet

Contact Sheet, Storyboard, and Thumbnail Strip combine sampled frames into one image. Pick By count for evenly spaced timestamps, By interval to start at 0 seconds and repeat at the chosen interval, or Explicit list to add HH:MM:SS values with Add.

Auto columns/rows calculates the grid. Clear it to set Columns. Set cell width and height, Gap, Padding, and Burn in timestamp labels. Contact Sheet starts with 12 cells, Storyboard with 6 larger cells, and Thumbnail Strip with 10 smaller cells and labels off.

Also export individual frames as ZIP adds the sampled stills beside the composed sheet. Set Interval Extractor uses its own timestamp list. Select Format, enter a timestamp, choose Add, and use Download ZIP after the list contains a timestamp.

Choose a mode for the output

Use Single Frame for one source-sized still. Use Video Poster when the output needs a chosen canvas, or Thumbnail when the output should use a cover crop at a preset or custom size.

Contact Sheet and Storyboard keep timestamp labels on by default. Thumbnail Strip starts with compact cells and labels off. Set Interval Extractor creates individual stills at the timestamps you add.

Video Preview Generator or subtitle extraction

Use Video Extract Tools for still frames or embedded subtitle streams. Choose Video Subtitle Extractor to inspect subtitle language, codec, title, or disposition and export selected streams.

Frequently asked questions

How do I extract a frame from a video at an exact time?

Use Single Frame and enter the time in Go to (min:sec:ms), then save with Download image. Approximate frame uses a 30 FPS estimate.

Can I make a video thumbnail at a custom size?

Enter Width and Height in Thumbnail or choose one of its size buttons. Thumbnail output uses a cover crop, so the tool can remove edges to fill the requested canvas.

What is the difference between a contact sheet and a storyboard?

Contact Sheet starts with 12 labeled cells at 240x135. Storyboard starts with 6 labeled cells at 360x202. Both sample timestamps and compose the frames into one downloadable image.

Why will my video not load?

The selected file must have a video type and be decodable by the browser. If decoding fails, the page reports that the video could not be decoded.

Does the video preview generator upload my video?

The selected file is read through a local browser object URL. The page code does not send the video in a network request, so processing stays in the browser.
