How to compress a video
Add one or more files, set the output options, and click Run compression. Each input gets its own row with Original, Compressed, Savings, and Status values. The selected files stay in browser memory while the page encodes H.264 with Fast (GPU) when that path is available, or uses Compatible (CPU).
- Drop files into Drop video files here or click browse files.
- Set Quality, Resolution, and Codec. Select Remove audio when the output should have no audio track.
- Choose Fast (GPU) or Compatible (CPU).
- Open Advanced options for a time range, filters, bitrate settings, or audio settings.
- Click Run compression. Download a row's result or click Download all as ZIP.
How the main controls change the output
Quality runs from 0% to 100%. A value in Bitrate (kbps) overrides Quality. Resolution keeps the source size with Keep original, or changes it to 1080p, 720p, 480p, or 360p. Codec chooses H.264 - MP4, VP9 - WebM, or AV1 - MP4. Remove audio adds no audio track to the output.
Quality: 50%
Resolution: 720p
Codec: H.264 - MP4
Output: MP4 video at 720p
What Advanced options changes
Advanced options shows different encoder fields for each engine. Fast (GPU) has Bitrate (kbps) - overrides quality, Bitrate mode, Latency mode, Keyframe every N frames, and Hardware acceleration. Its other controls set Start time (seconds), End time (seconds), Speed, Flip, Rotate, Brightness, Contrast, Saturation, Grayscale, Audio bitrate (kbps), and Volume.
Compatible (CPU) shows CRF, Preset (speed vs. compression), and Audio bitrate. Fast (GPU) encodes H.264 through the browser's WebCodecs path when the needed encoder is available. For VP9 or AV1, the page shows a notice and uses the compatible CPU encoder.
What files does Video Compressor accept?
The picker accepts a video MIME type or a filename ending in .mp4, .webm, .mov, .avi, .mkv, .m4v, .ogv, .mpeg, .mpg, or .3gp. The drop area lists MP4, WebM, MOV, AVI, MKV, and "and more" as examples. If the selection has no accepted video, the page shows "No supported video files were selected."
The selected video stays in browser memory. The code writes it to the local FFmpeg/WebAssembly engine or reads it through browser video APIs, then creates a downloadable result. The page does not send that video through a form post, fetch, XMLHttpRequest, or sendBeacon.
Examples of video compression settings
- For a smaller attachment, choose a lower Resolution, check Savings in the result row, and download that row.
- For a phone clip without room sound, select Remove audio before clicking Run compression.
- For a shorter excerpt, set Start time (seconds) and End time (seconds), then choose Keep original or a smaller Resolution.
- For several clips, add them in one selection and use Download all as ZIP after processing.
When Video Compressor fits
Use Video Compressor to reduce or re-encode video files while setting quality, resolution, codec, audio, or a time range. The parent Video Compress Tools category covers related video-size tasks. This page has no merge control, so clips must be combined elsewhere before you compress the combined file.
Processing, formats, and local handling
The page loads local FFmpeg/WebAssembly assets for its CPU path. Its loading message says ~30 MB, one-time download. The upload area lists example formats, while the complete accepted-format list is defined by the picker and file check in the page code.
Frequently asked questions
How do I compress an MP4 to 720p?
Select the MP4, choose 720p under Resolution, select H.264 - MP4 under Codec, and click Run compression.
Does compressing a video remove its audio?
Audio stays in the output unless you select Remove audio. Advanced options can also change audio bitrate and Volume.
Can I compress several video files at once?
Yes. Add multiple accepted files, then click Run compression; the results table gives each file its own row and download when ready.
Does Video Compressor upload my video?
The selected video stays in browser memory while the page processes it and creates the result there.
What formats are supported?
The upload area lists MP4, WebM, MOV, AVI, MKV, and "and more" as examples. The picker also checks .m4v, .ogv, .mpeg, .mpg, and .3gp filenames, plus video MIME types.
