How to use a video to GIF maker
Choose a section of a local video with the trim handles, adjust the crop box, then set Frame rate, Resize, Colors, Dithering, and Loop before you click Convert. The exported GIF uses those clip, crop, palette, and playback settings. Audio is removed during conversion.
- Drop a video here or click browse files to choose a local video.
- Use the trim handles to set Start and End, then click Preview trimmed range to check the selection.
- Drag the crop box to move it or adjust a corner. Click Reset crop to restore the full frame.
- Choose Frame rate, Resize, Colors, Dithering, and Loop. Custom width reveals Width (px), and Custom play count reveals Play count.
- Click Convert, review Generated GIF, and click Download GIF.
How trim, crop, and Resize change the GIF
The trim handles set Start and End on the source video, with a minimum selected length of 0.1 seconds. Preview trimmed range starts at Start and loops back when playback reaches End.
Input: local video, Start 0:00.0, End 0:00.1
Output: Generated GIF, 0.1 seconds, no audio
Drag the crop box over the video preview, or adjust one of its corners. Resize keeps the crop at 100%, 75%, 50%, 33%, or 25%, or lets you choose Custom width. With Custom width, enter a positive value in Width (px); the output height follows the crop proportions.
What Frame rate, Colors, and Dithering change
Frame rate has choices of 5, 8, 10, 12, 15, and 24 fps. A lower value creates fewer frames for the selected clip. Colors sets the GIF palette with choices of 16, 32, 64, 128, or 256. Dithering has Bayer - smooth gradients, Floyd-Steinberg - fine detail, and None - flattest, smallest.
Loop controls playback after export. Choose Loop forever, Play once, or Custom play count, then enter a value in Play count. Loop forever is selected when the workspace opens.
Why the GIF size is an estimate
The Estimated value uses crop dimensions, clip length, Frame rate, and Colors. It is a heuristic, so it can differ from Actual size after conversion. The tool shows a large-output warning above 8 MB, and Colors set to 32 or fewer can trigger a banding warning for photographs or gradients.
Why some videos fail and why audio is missing
The source file needs usable duration and dimensions, and the browser must decode it. An unsupported video type, missing metadata, or decoding error produces a message asking you to choose another video. The GIF export has no audio because conversion passes FFmpeg's -an option.
Conversion runs in the browser with FFmpeg WebAssembly. The page can show Loading GIF encoder (~30 MB, one-time download) while the encoder loads. The source video is read from a local object URL, and the page does not send it to a server.
Where video to GIF conversion comes up
- A product designer can trim a screen recording, crop it to the interface area, and set Loop to Loop forever before adding the GIF to a design review.
- A support writer can select the part of a local demonstration that shows one setting, lower Frame rate, and download the result for documentation.
When to use another video conversion tool
Use this page when you need an animated GIF with trim, crop, palette, or loop controls. The Video Convert Tools category covers other video format changes. Choose the Video Frame Rate Converter when you need to change a video's frame rate directly and manage audio sync.
Frequently asked questions
How do I convert video to GIF with a selected section?
Use the trim handles to set Start and End, choose your crop and GIF settings, then click Convert. Review Generated GIF and click Download GIF to save it.
Does a video to GIF maker keep audio?
No. The exported GIF has no audio because conversion passes FFmpeg's -an option.
Is my video uploaded when I use this video to GIF maker?
No. The page processes the source video locally in the browser with FFmpeg WebAssembly and does not send the video to a server.
Why is the estimated GIF size different from the actual size?
The estimate is a heuristic based on crop dimensions, clip length, Frame rate, and Colors. The Actual size appears after the GIF is created and can differ from Estimated.
