How to compress GIF files
Add an animated GIF, adjust the settings, and click Compress. GIF Compressor creates a new GIF, shows the original beside the compressed preview, and lets you download one result or several results in a ZIP file.
- Drop GIF files into the drop zone, or select
browse filesand choose them. - Set
Frame rate,Resize,Colors,Dithering, andLoop. - Click
Compress. The files are processed one at a time. - For a completed row, click
Preview compressed GIF, compare Before with After, then clickDownload compressed GIF. With two or more completed results,Download all as ZIPcan collect them together.
What Frame rate, Resize, and Colors change
Frame rate keeps the original timing or changes it to one of the listed fps values: 24, 20, 15, 12, 10, 8, or 5. Resize has percentage presets and Custom width. The custom choice reveals Width (px); the encoder calculates the height from the original proportions. Colors sets the palette size.
Frame rate: Keep original -> 12 fps
Resize: 100% - keep original -> 50%
Colors: 256 -> 64
The page describes lower color counts as usually producing smaller files. They also change the palette used for gradients and detail. A custom width below 2 is changed to 2 before processing.
How Dithering and Loop affect a GIF
Dithering has three choices: Bayer - smooth gradients, Floyd-Steinberg - fine detail, and None - flattest, smallest. Loop sets Loop forever, Play once, or Custom play count. The custom choice reveals Play count, which is limited to values 1 through 100.
Changing a setting clears the previous result. Click Compress again after each change you want to test.
GIF input checks and output estimates
The picker accepts GIF files, then the page checks the GIF header. A file with an invalid header stays in the list with an error. Select Remove GIF before adding another file. Adding the same name and file size again has no effect.
The estimate uses the first readable GIF, its dimensions, the selected resize, and the color count. The animation affects the actual output size. If the output is the same size or larger, the Savings column shows 0%.
The first run can show Loading GIF encoder (~30 MB, one-time download).... The page has no code-defined maximum file size or file count, though an individual file can still return a processing error.
Examples of GIF compression settings
To reduce an animation's dimensions, choose a percentage under Resize or enter a value under Width (px). Check the Before and After previews after compression.
For a screen recording, choose a lower value under Frame rate and Colors, then set Loop forever or Play once under Loop.
For several GIF files, add them to the list and wait for each row to finish. Once two results are complete, select Download all as ZIP.
GIF Compressor or another image tool?
Use Image Compress Tools to browse the image compression category. Choose Image Compressor for image files with quality presets or a target file size. Choose SVG Optimizer for SVG markup when you need to remove selected comments, metadata, redundant attributes, or unused IDs without rasterizing it.
Frequently asked questions
How do I compress an animated GIF?
Add a GIF, choose the settings, and click Compress. Open Preview compressed GIF to review Before and After, then use Download compressed GIF.
Can I compress multiple GIF files at once?
Add multiple GIF files to the list. GIF Compressor processes them sequentially, and Download all as ZIP becomes available after two results finish.
What does GIF Compressor do with frame rate and colors?
Frame rate changes the selected fps. Colors changes the palette size. The resulting file size varies with the animation.
Why is my GIF estimate different from the output size?
The estimate uses the first readable GIF's size and dimensions, the selected resize, and the color count. The animation can produce an output that is the same size or larger, so Savings can show 0%.
What happens if a GIF file fails the header check?
The file remains in the queue with an error and is not compressed. Select Remove GIF, then add a GIF with a valid header.
