Homoglyph Detector

Paste your text to scan for cross-script confusable characters - lookalikes from Cyrillic, Greek, and other scripts substituted for Latin letters - all locally in your browser.

How to use the Homoglyph Detector

  1. Paste text into the field labelled "Text to scan for homoglyphs".
  2. Select Upload to choose a .txt, .csv, .log, or .md file.
  3. Read Highlighted Preview to locate marked characters.
  4. Check Detection Report for Character, Code Point, Script, Position, Likely Confusable, and Risk.
  5. Select Copy report or Download CSV after findings appear.

What Detection Report shows

Each row identifies the character, its code point, detected script, position, mapped Latin alternative, and risk. Positions start at 1. Highlighted Preview uses the same risk value for each mark, which lets you match a visible character to its row.

Position 2: а | U+0430 | Cyrillic | "a" (Latin) | high

The position follows the JavaScript character sequence created by Array.from. Code points use uppercase hexadecimal notation, such as U+0430.

How cross-script lookalike detection works

The Homoglyph Detector counts non-whitespace characters by script and ignores Common and Unknown for that count. The script with the highest count becomes dominant. A selected confusable is reported only when its script differs from the dominant script, so a Cyrillic character in mostly Cyrillic text can remain unflagged.

The lookup covers selected entries from Cyrillic, Greek, and Armenian, including an entry mapped to 6. It does not cover every Unicode confusable. If no eligible script is counted, Latin is the default.

What the Homoglyph Detector does not change

  • The tool reports matches and leaves the input text unchanged. It does not normalize, filter, validate, or replace characters.
  • An empty Detection Report means no selected table entry was found outside the dominant script. Other confusable characters can still be present.
  • Copy report and Download CSV stay disabled until the report has findings.

Where this check comes up

Paste a domain, email address, account name, headline, or product name when one letter looks different from the rest. Use the code point in Detection Report to compare that character with the intended spelling.

For a string in a log, CSV, or Markdown file, select Upload. Download CSV saves the findings as homoglyph-report.csv for later review.

Choose the right text analysis tool

Use Text Analysis Tools to choose among text comparison, measurement, pattern testing, language detection, and Unicode inspection. The Invisible Character Detector checks zero-width spaces, control codes, bidi overrides, and other hidden Unicode characters.

Choose the Unicode Inspector for grapheme clusters, names, blocks, categories, encodings, or flags. Use the Keyword Density Analyzer to count one-word to three-word phrases and review their density.

Frequently asked questions

What does the Homoglyph Detector find?

It finds selected characters that resemble Latin letters but belong to another script. Detection Report lists the character, code point, script, position, likely Latin alternative, and risk.

Why did the Homoglyph Detector find no matches?

No matches means no selected confusable was found outside the dominant script. The result does not cover every Unicode lookalike.

Can I download a Detection Report?

Yes. Select Download CSV after findings appear to save homoglyph-report.csv, or select Copy report for tab-separated report text.

Is text scanned in the browser?

Yes. JavaScript scans the text in your browser as you edit it, and the page code does not send the input text in a network request.
