How to validate Base64 strings
The result separates the checks that are easy to miss in a pasted value. It shows the status, variant, padding, encoded length, decoded length, and detected content type. Valid UTF-8 bytes also get a text preview, while bulk results can be copied or downloaded as CSV.
Validate one Base64 value
- Select Validate.
- Paste a string into
Base64 value. - Read the status and Base64 Info breakdown that appears below the input.
- Select Copy to copy the displayed validation breakdown.
For example, SGVsbG8gV29ybGQ= is valid Standard Base64 and decodes to readable text.
Input: SGVsbG8gV29ybGQ=
Output: Hello World
Base64 Info lists Variant, Padding, Padding Correct, Encoded Length, Decoded Length, and Content Type. If the bytes form valid UTF-8, the result also shows Decoded Text. A valid structure does not tell you that the decoded data is safe, authentic, or meaningful.
Bulk Base64 validation and CSV results
- Select Bulk Validate.
- Paste values into
Base64 values to validate, one per line or separated with commas. - Review each Valid or Invalid row and its variant, content type, byte length, or error.
- Select Copy CSV or Download CSV after the rows appear.
Blank entries are ignored. The CSV records the submitted value, status, variant, padding, padding check, encoded and decoded lengths, content type, and error. Keep that file beside the table when you need to inspect the rows later.
What Base64 Validator rejects or identifies
The validator trims surrounding whitespace before checking a value. It rejects values that mix standard and URL-Safe characters, contain characters outside the Base64 set, place padding incorrectly, or have a malformed length. A blank Base64 value shows no result, and a blank bulk field produces no rows.
A valid value is labeled Standard or URL-Safe. Content detection can identify PNG, JPEG, GIF, PDF, and ZIP signatures, JSON text, UTF-8 text, or Binary data. An unpadded value can pass when its length is valid. If padding is supplied, its count must match the expected length.
JavaScript performs the Base64 work in the browser. The page has no fetch, XMLHttpRequest, sendBeacon, or form post for submitted values, so treat decoded output as untrusted data.
Choose the right data validator
Data Validation Tools groups checks for structured values. Use Base64 Validator for encoded strings and their structural details. Choose Email Validator for email syntax, URL Validator, Parser & Checker for URL parts such as the scheme and hostname, or UUID Validator for UUID structure, version, variant, and v1 timestamp details.
Where Base64 validation comes up
A token copied from a log can go into Base64 value for a structure check and a variant label. If the decoded bytes are readable, Decoded Text shows them without changing the input.
For several fixture values, paste them into Base64 values to validate and scan the Invalid rows. The CSV error column identifies problems such as bad padding or illegal characters, giving you the details needed to check a corrected sample.
Frequently asked questions
Why does my Base64 string fail validation?
It fails when the value contains invalid characters, mixes standard and URL-Safe characters, has misplaced padding, uses an incorrect padded length, or contains malformed Base64 data. The status area shows the specific error.
What does a valid Base64 check tell me?
A valid check tells you that the value can be decoded as Standard or URL-Safe Base64 and reports its padding, lengths, and detected content type. It does not verify that the decoded bytes are safe or trustworthy.
How do I check multiple Base64 strings?
Select Bulk Validate and enter values in Base64 values to validate, one per line or comma-separated. Review the rows, then select Copy CSV or Download CSV.
Can Base64 Validator decode an image or document?
It can classify some decoded bytes as PNG image, JPEG image, GIF image, PDF document, or ZIP archive. The result reports the detected type and byte length, rather than presenting the file for viewing.
