How to work with Input text
Paste or type lines into Input text, choose a Mode, then inspect Output text. Add Indent and Remove Indent use the selected Indent character and Indent levels. Tabs -> Spaces and Spaces -> Tabs change whitespace, while Hanging Indent and Smart Auto-Format use line structure to place indentation.
Set the mode and spacing controls
- Paste or type text into Input text, or choose Upload for a text file.
- Select a Mode: Add Indent, Remove Indent, Tabs -> Spaces, Spaces -> Tabs, Hanging Indent, or Smart Auto-Format.
- Set Indent character, Spaces per level, Indent levels, and Skip empty lines when those controls apply.
- Review the result in Output text.
- Choose Copy or Download.
What Add Indent and Remove Indent change
Add Indent writes the selected unit at the start of each line. It repeats that unit for the number in Indent levels. Choose Spaces or Tab character (\t) under Indent character. Remove Indent removes up to the selected number of leading spaces when Spaces is selected, or leading tab characters up to Indent levels when Tab character is selected. Spaces later in a line stay in place.
Input: item one
item two
Add Indent, Spaces per level 2, Indent levels 1:
item one
item two
With Skip empty lines checked, empty and whitespace-only lines stay unchanged for these two modes. Spaces per level accepts values from 1 to 8. Indent levels accepts values from 1 to 20.
How Tabs -> Spaces and Spaces -> Tabs work
Tabs -> Spaces replaces each tab character on a processed line with the number of spaces shown by Spaces per level. Spaces -> Tabs changes leading groups of exactly that many spaces into tab characters. Spaces inside a sentence stay unchanged.
Input: name:\tPatricia
Tabs -> Spaces, Spaces per level 4:
name: Patricia
Skip empty lines leaves empty and whitespace-only lines unchanged during these conversions. Upload accepts .txt, .csv, .log, .md, and plain-text files.
When to use Hanging Indent or Smart Auto-Format
Hanging Indent keeps the first non-empty line after a blank line at its current position and adds the selected unit to later non-empty lines in the block. The Quick presets include Hanging Indent (MLA / APA), along with 2 Spaces, 4 Spaces, 8 Spaces, and 1 Tab.
Smart Auto-Format finds the smallest leading indentation among non-empty lines, removes that shared amount, and rewrites what remains with the selected indent unit. Blank lines stay blank. Tabs are measured using the width set by Spaces per level, so mixed tabs and spaces use that value.
Examples with each mode
A code block with tabs can go through Tabs -> Spaces before it is copied into a project that uses spaces.
A bibliography with blank-line-separated entries can go through Hanging Indent before it is moved into a document.
A nested Markdown block with a shared left margin can go through Smart Auto-Format before download.
Indent Text compared with nearby formatters
Choose Text Formatting & Layout Tools for indentation and tab conversion. Use Add Prefix & Suffix when each line needs custom text before or after it. Choose Align Text Columns for delimiter-separated fields, or Text Formatter when one pipeline needs line numbers, prefixes, suffixes, and indentation.
Frequently asked questions
How do I indent text online?
Paste or type lines into Input text. Select Add Indent, choose Spaces or Tab character, and set Spaces per level and Indent levels. Check Output text before choosing Copy or Download.
How do I remove indentation from text?
Select Remove Indent. Set Indent character and Indent levels. The mode changes only leading spaces or tabs on each processed line.
How do I convert tabs to spaces in bulk?
Select Tabs -> Spaces and set Spaces per level. Each tab on a processed line becomes that number of spaces.
How do I make a hanging indent for a bibliography?
Select Hanging Indent or the Hanging Indent (MLA / APA) Quick preset. The first non-empty line after a blank line stays at its current position. Later lines in that block receive the selected indentation.
