How to reverse text
Put text in Input text or choose Upload to load a file. Then select Characters (grapheme clusters) or Words under Reverse by. Text Reverser works inside each line, keeps whitespace runs in Words mode, and lets you choose what happens to punctuation. The output appears in Reversed output after the input or an option changes.
- Type or paste text into Input text, or select Upload to load a file.
- Choose Characters (grapheme clusters) or Words from Reverse by.
- For Words, choose Move with word or Stay in place from Punctuation.
- Read the result in Reversed output after the input or an option changes.
- Select Copy, Download, or Reset.
Reverse text by characters or words
Characters (grapheme clusters) treats each visible grapheme cluster as one unit, then reverses those units within each line. A cluster can contain a base letter with combining marks or a multi-part emoji, so Intl.Segmenter keeps those sequences together when it is available. The fallback groups combining marks, variation selectors, and joined units too.
Input: hello world
Output: dlrow olleh
Words reverses non-whitespace chunks inside each line. Each chunk keeps its spelling. A line with zero or one non-whitespace chunk stays unchanged.
Reverse words in a line with punctuation options
Punctuation appears when Reverse by is set to Words. Move with word reverses complete non-whitespace chunks, so punctuation stays with the chunk it started beside. Stay in place keeps each chunk's leading and trailing non-word characters in their original slots while the word cores change positions.
Input: Hello, world!
Move with word: world! Hello,
Stay in place: world, Hello!
Stay in place identifies a word core with Unicode letter, mark, and number properties. Every non-whitespace chunk still counts as a token, including a chunk made only of symbols or punctuation.
What happens to spaces and line breaks?
Text Reverser splits the input into lines and processes each line separately. In Words mode, it keeps each whitespace run in place and moves only the non-whitespace chunks. An empty input hides Reversed output and disables Copy and Download.
The output joins lines with one detected delimiter. Mixed CRLF and LF endings can be normalized, and CR-only input is joined with line-feed characters. The status line counts the original input's lines, whitespace-delimited words, and grapheme clusters.
When to reverse text inside each line
Use character mode when you need a line's visible sequence in reverse order, such as when preparing a rendering check or a mirrored-layout fixture. Use word mode to inspect how chunks and punctuation move while the original line breaks stay in place.
For changes to complete lines, Sort Lines orders them alphabetically, numerically, naturally, or by length, in ascending or descending order. Shuffle Lines randomly reorders complete lines while keeping their content intact. Text Reverser changes content inside each line, which is why it sits with Text Organization Tools.
Frequently asked questions
How do I reverse characters online?
Choose Characters (grapheme clusters) from Reverse by after entering text. Text Reverser reverses the grapheme clusters within each line and leaves the line order unchanged.
How do I reverse words in a line?
Choose Words from Reverse by. Text Reverser reverses non-whitespace chunks within each line, keeps whitespace runs in place, and leaves each chunk's spelling unchanged.
Can I reverse words without moving punctuation?
Yes. Set Reverse by to Words, then set Punctuation to Stay in place. The tool reverses the word cores and leaves each chunk's leading and trailing non-word characters in their existing slots.
Does Text Reverser reverse line order?
No. Text Reverser processes each line separately and keeps the lines in their existing order. Mixed line endings can be rejoined with one detected delimiter.
What happens when the input is empty or has one word?
An empty input hides Reversed output and disables Copy and Download. A one-chunk line stays unchanged in Words mode because there is no second chunk to reorder.
