Shuffle Lines

Randomly reorder complete lines of your text - every line's content stays byte-for-byte identical, only the order changes. Set a seed for a reproducible result, control the shuffle pass count, choose a blank-line policy, and pick which line ending to output.

Number of shuffle passes, from 1 to 50.

How to shuffle lines

Paste text into Input text or load a supported text file with Upload. Shuffle Lines moves each complete line to a new position while keeping the characters inside that line together. Seed (optional) can reproduce the same order for the same input and settings. Blank lines, Shuffle count, Line ending, and Prevent identical order change how the output is built.

  1. Paste text into Input text, or click Upload and choose a .txt, .csv, .log, .md, or text/plain file.
  2. Choose values for Seed (optional), Shuffle count, Blank lines, and Line ending. Check Prevent identical order to make the tool retry when it produces the original order.
  3. Read the changed order in Shuffled output. The output updates after the input or a setting changes.
  4. Click Copy or Download. Download saves the result as shuffled-lines.txt.

Randomize line order with a seed

Shuffle Lines treats each split line as one value. For this input:

red
blue
green

One possible output is:

green
red
blue

Enter list42 in Seed (optional) to reproduce the order for the same text and settings. The value is trimmed before use. A blank value uses pseudorandom output, so a later run can produce a different order or the original order.

What Blank lines and Line ending change

The Blank lines control has three choices. Shuffle with other lines puts blank lines into the same shuffle as every other line. Keep in original position leaves blank lines in their existing slots while the other lines move. Remove before shuffling drops empty and whitespace-only lines.

With Remove before shuffling, the middle line containing three spaces disappears and the output has two lines. Line ending selects the separators: Auto (match input), LF (\n), or CRLF (\r\n). Auto uses CRLF when the input has at least as many CRLF endings as LF-only endings and at least one CRLF ending. Otherwise, it uses LF.

How Shuffle count and Prevent identical order work

Shuffle count accepts 1 to 50 passes. Values below 1 become 1, values above 50 become 50, and invalid or empty values become 1. When the input has more than one line, Prevent identical order retries a matching result up to 200 times. If it still matches, the code swaps the final two positions when those two values differ. Repeated line content can make the visible text look unchanged.

Empty Input text gives empty Shuffled output, no stats, and disabled Copy and Download controls. Shuffle with other lines and Keep in original position preserve the input line count; Remove before shuffling can reduce it by dropping blank lines. The tool changes line order, with the selected blank-line policy applied, and leaves words inside each line alone. The page code processes the text in the browser and makes no request that sends it elsewhere.

Ways to use the shuffled output

  • Click Copy when the reordered lines need to go into another field or document.
  • Click Download when the result needs to be saved as shuffled-lines.txt.
  • Set Seed (optional) when the same text and settings need to produce the same order again.

Choose a text organization tool

Use Text Organization Tools when you need to sort, shuffle, or reverse text structure. Choose Sort Lines when the lines need alphabetical, numerical, natural, or length-based ordering. Choose Text Reverser when the task is reversing characters or whitespace-delimited chunks within each line.

Frequently asked questions

How do I shuffle lines without changing their text?

Paste or upload the text. Shuffle Lines moves complete lines while keeping each line's characters together. Choose Remove before shuffling to drop empty or whitespace-only lines.

Can I randomize line order with a seed?

Enter a non-empty value in Seed (optional) to reproduce the order for the same input and settings. The value is trimmed first. A blank field uses pseudorandom output.

What happens to blank lines when I reorder lines?

Blank lines can shuffle with other lines, stay in their original positions, or be removed before shuffling. The tool treats a line as blank when trimming it leaves an empty string.

Why did Shuffle Lines return the original order?

A random result can match the input order. Prevent identical order retries up to 200 times and then attempts a swap when the final two values differ. Repeated line content or one distinguishable arrangement can still look unchanged.
