Numbers to Words Converter

Convert numbers to written words, or written words back to numbers.

How to convert numbers to words

Paste one value per line into Input. Choose Auto-detect, or set the direction yourself with Numbers → Words or Words → Numbers. The converter keeps blank lines in place, and a line that fails stays in the output for review.

  1. Type or paste numbers or written number words into Input.
  2. Select Auto-detect, Numbers → Words, or Words → Numbers.
  3. Read each converted line in Converted output.
  4. Choose Copy or Download when you need the result elsewhere.

Numbers to words converter examples

Auto-detect selects Numbers → Words when every non-empty line has an optional sign and 1 to 12 digits. If one line does not match that pattern, it selects Words → Numbers. Set a fixed direction when the input mixes formats.

Input: 42
Numbers → Words output: forty-two

Input: minus two hundred fifty
Words → Numbers output: -250

How words and lines are interpreted

Each line is converted on its own. Blank lines stay blank, and the output keeps the same line positions. Written input is read as English number words. Commas and hyphens act as separators, repeated spaces are folded together, and the word and is ignored.

Use Upload for a .txt, .csv, .log, .md, or plain-text file. The conversion runs in the page. The script makes no network request with the input, so the content stays in the browser.

Numbers to words limits and failed lines

The converter handles whole numbers from -999,999,999,999 through 999,999,999,999. Negative numbers become words that begin with "minus". Zero becomes "zero". Decimal values, currency symbols, scientific notation, and other mixed formats cause a line to fail.

When a line cannot be converted, Converted output keeps the original text and the status message gives its line number. Other valid lines still appear in the result.

Where this comes up

  • Convert a column of whole-number values into written number words, then use Copy to place the result in a document.
  • Read a text export containing English number words by choosing Words → Numbers, checking failed lines, and using Download.
  • Prepare a worksheet with values such as 42 and 1250, then keep the converted lines beside the original list.

Choose the right text transformation tool

Open Text Transformation Tools for another text operation. Use Roman Numeral Converter for Roman numerals or date formatting. Binary Converter handles character codes and decimal, hexadecimal, binary, or octal forms. For literal text or regular-expression replacements, use Find and Replace Text.

Frequently asked questions

Can I convert written number words back to digits?

Yes. Select Words → Numbers and enter English number words such as "minus two hundred fifty". The output is -250.

Does Auto-detect convert every line the same way?

Yes. Auto-detect selects one direction for the complete input based on its non-empty lines. Use a direction option when the input contains different kinds of lines.

What happens to an unsupported number?

The original line stays in Converted output, and the status message names the line that could not be converted. Other valid lines are still returned.

Can I convert decimals or currency amounts?

No. The converter handles whole numbers only, so decimals, currency symbols, and scientific notation are left unchanged and reported as conversion errors.
