Roman Numeral Converter

Convert numbers to Roman numerals, decode Roman numerals back to digits, or format any date in Roman style with a tattoo font preview.

Conversion mode

How to use the Roman numeral converter

Choose a conversion mode, enter the values it expects, then read the result in the matching output area. Number → Roman and Roman → Number process one value per line. Date → Roman uses Day, Month, and Year, then repeats the formatted date in Tattoo Font Preview.

  1. Select Number → Roman, Roman → Number, or Date → Roman.
  2. Enter values in Input number or Roman numeral, or fill Day, Month, and Year when using a date.
  3. Review the result in Converted output or Date output.
  4. Select Copy or Download for standard output, or Copy beside Date output for a date.

Convert numbers to Roman numerals

Select Number → Roman and enter a whole number from 1 through 3999. The converter trims each line. A blank line stays blank, while a line with letters, decimals, or a number outside that range becomes an error line.

Input: 2024
Output: MMXXIV

Each non-empty line is converted on its own, so several values can share one result. Copy and Download remain disabled if any line produces an error.

Decode Roman numerals to numbers

Choose Roman → Number to decode a standard Roman numeral. The converter trims the input and changes it to uppercase before checking it, so xiv produces the same result as XIV. A sequence outside the accepted pattern produces Error: Invalid Roman numeral.

Input: xiv
Output: 14

The accepted pattern includes subtractive pairs such as IV, IX, XL, XC, CD, and CM. A blank line stays blank. Copy and Download become available only when every non-empty line converts without an error.

Format a date as Roman numerals

Select Date → Roman, then enter numeric values in Day, Month, and Year. Day accepts 1–31, Month 1–12, and Year 1–3999. The converter also checks the number of days in the selected month and applies leap-year rules.

Day: 16 Month: 10 Year: 2026
Date output: XVI · X · MMXXVI

Date output places centered dots between the three Roman values. Tattoo Font Preview shows the same formatted date. An incomplete date keeps the result hidden; a complete but invalid date displays Enter a valid date (day, month, and year). and leaves Copy disabled.

Use one value per line

For a list of years, put one number on each line in Input number or Roman numeral. The output keeps the same line structure, including blank lines, so each result stays next to its input position.

For a date used in artwork, fill Day, Month, and Year and compare Date output with Tattoo Font Preview. Copy becomes available after the date passes validation.

If one line is invalid, the other lines still produce output, but Copy and Download remain disabled until the Error line is corrected.

Choose another converter for other formats

Use the Text Transformation Tools category when you need a different text conversion. The Numbers to Words Converter changes digits to written number words or changes written number words back to digits. The Morse Code Converter handles Morse code and includes signal-lamp playback.
