Text Code Converter

Convert text to decimal, hexadecimal, binary, or octal character codes and back. Choose a separator and prefix, zero-pad the output, inspect a per-character breakdown, or flip individual bits in the interactive Binary mode.

How to convert text to binary

Enter text, choose a base, and read one code value for each Unicode code point. Text Code Converter also decodes those values, shows the code points in four bases, and opens Bit-Flipper when Base is Binary.

Convert text to binary or another base

  1. Enter text or character codes in Input text or character codes. Choose Upload to load a .txt, .csv, .log, or .md file.
  2. Select Text → Code to encode characters, or Code → Text to decode code values.
  3. Choose Decimal, Hexadecimal, Binary, or Octal in Base. Set Separator to Space, Comma, or None, then choose Prefix (0x / 0b / 0o), Zero-pad, or Uppercase (hex).
  4. Read the result in the read-only Converted output field. Copy or Download the result when you need it in another document.

What output does the Text Code Converter produce?

Text → Code reads each Unicode code point and writes it in the selected base. With Hi in Input text or character codes, these examples use Space as the separator and the formatting shown on each line.

Input: Hi
Binary, Zero-pad: 01001000 01101001
Hexadecimal, Prefix: 0x48 0x69
Decimal: 72 105
Octal, Prefix: 0o110 0o151

Zero-pad adds leading digits to the configured width: 3 for Decimal, 2 for Hexadecimal, 8 for Binary, and 3 for Octal. Prefix adds 0x, 0b, or 0o to the matching base. Uppercase (hex) changes hexadecimal letters to uppercase, and it is available when Base is Hexadecimal. Decimal has no prefix.

How to decode character codes back to text

Select Code → Text and separate values with Space or Comma. Space accepts runs of whitespace. Comma trims each comma-separated value. None removes whitespace and cuts Binary into 8-digit groups, Hexadecimal into 2-digit groups, or Octal into 3-digit groups. In Decimal Code → Text mode, choosing None changes Separator to Space because decimal values have different lengths.

For the selected base, the decoder removes 0x or \x in Hexadecimal, 0b in Binary, and 0o in Octal. It rejects invalid digits, values above 0x10FFFF, and surrogate code points. The error appears in Converted output, and Copy and Download remain disabled.

What the breakdown and Bit-Flipper show

After a successful conversion with non-empty text, Per-Character Breakdown lists Char, Decimal, Hex, Binary, and Octal in one row per code point. It shows up to 200 Unicode code points. The panel stays hidden after a decoding error or when the text has more than 200 code points.

Choose Binary in Base to open Bit-Flipper. Enter text in Bit-Flipper input, then click a bit to update Decoded. The input accepts 32 UTF-16 code units, while the grid uses at most the first 32 Unicode code points. A code point above 255 gets more than eight bit buttons.

Where this comes up

Checking a log line works like this: paste the character sequence into Input text or character codes, switch Base to Hexadecimal, and compare the output with a debugger value.

Learners can read one character's Decimal, Hex, Binary, and Octal values in Per-Character Breakdown, then flip a Binary bit and watch Decoded change.

Protocol notes are easier to write when you turn a short label into zero-padded Binary or prefixed Hexadecimal, then copy the result into documentation or a test case.

When another text converter fits better

Use Text Conversion Tools to browse related text representations. Choose Unicode Converter for \uXXXX escapes or Reveal Gremlins. Choose Base64 Encoder / Decoder for Base64 text. Choose Markdown ↔ HTML Converter for Markdown and HTML conversion with a rendered preview.

Frequently asked questions

How do I convert text to binary?

Enter the text, keep Text → Code selected, choose Binary in Base, and leave Zero-pad enabled for 8-digit binary values. The output separates each code point according to Separator.

How do I convert hexadecimal codes back to text?

Choose Code → Text and Hexadecimal, then enter separated values such as 48 69 or prefixed values such as 0x48 0x69. Choose Space or Comma so the decoder can identify each value.

Why can't Decimal use the None separator?

Decimal values have different lengths, so a raw digit stream cannot be split into character codes safely. The control changes to Space in Decimal Code → Text mode.

How many characters can Bit-Flipper handle?

Bit-Flipper input accepts 32 UTF-16 code units, and its grid renders at most 32 Unicode code points. Emoji can use more than one UTF-16 code unit, so the number of visible characters can be lower.
