How to shuffle words
The tool keeps the non-whitespace tokens in your input and moves them into the existing word positions. Choose a scope before you run it: Whole document (shuffle all words together), Per line (shuffle within each line only), or Per sentence (shuffle within each sentence only). Spaces, tabs, and line breaks stay where they are.
- Enter the text whose word order you want to change. Use Upload to read a text file into the page.
- Choose Whole document (shuffle all words together), Per line (shuffle within each line only), or Per sentence (shuffle within each sentence only).
- Enter a value in Seed (optional) when you want to reproduce the same shuffle later.
- Set Repeat count between
1and20to create multiple variants. - Enable Prevent original order when a group should be retried if its order stays unchanged, then use Copy or Download for the result.
Shuffle words by document, line, or sentence
- Whole document (shuffle all words together) puts every word in one group. A word can move across a line break.
- Per line (shuffle within each line only) keeps each line's tokens in that line. Blank lines and other whitespace stay in place.
- Per sentence (shuffle within each sentence only) starts a new group after a token ending in
.,!, or?, including supported closing quote or bracket characters.
A word token is any run of non-whitespace characters. A comma, hyphen, period, or closing bracket with no space before it stays attached to that token. The tool leaves spacing, capitalization, punctuation, and grammar as they are after the shuffle.
Input: one two three
Output: two three one
What Seed (optional) and Repeat count change
- Seed (optional) makes the result repeatable. The same input, scope, seed, and other settings produce the same order.
- Repeat count creates between 1 and 20 variants. Above
1, the output separates them with labels such asShuffle #1andShuffle #2. - Prevent original order retries a group when its shuffled order matches the input. The tool stops after 50 attempts.
A group with fewer than two tokens has no alternate order. The same applies when every token in that group has the same value. The stats bar reports the word count, group count, selected scope, and active seed when a seed is set.
What happens to the input
The shuffle runs in your browser. The page logic does not send the input in a network request. The result stays in the output area for Copy or Download, and the original input remains in its text area.
Examples for each shuffle scope
- For a word-order exercise, enter a sentence and choose Per sentence (shuffle within each sentence only), then use Copy on the generated arrangement.
- For line-based text, choose Per line (shuffle within each line only). Each line keeps its own word group while the line breaks stay in place.
- For a repeatable example, enter a Seed (optional) and keep it with the input and scope. Another run with those settings produces the same arrangement.
When another text tool fits better
Use Text Transformation Tools when you need to rearrange existing word tokens. Choose Find and Replace Text for literal text or regular-expression matches. Choose Split or Join Paragraphs to change sentence or paragraph line breaks. Choose Text Repeater to repeat the exact input with separators or indentation preserved.
Frequently asked questions
Can I shuffle words without changing spelling?
Yes. Shuffle Words rearranges the exact non-whitespace tokens already in the input. It does not add, delete, or edit their spelling.
Can I randomize word order per line or per sentence?
Yes. Choose Per line (shuffle within each line only) to keep each line separate. Choose Per sentence (shuffle within each sentence only) to shuffle the detected sentence groups.
Does Seed (optional) reproduce the same word shuffle?
Yes. A non-empty seed reproduces the same result when the input, scope, and other settings stay unchanged.
What does Prevent original order do?
Prevent original order retries a group when its shuffled order is unchanged, up to 50 attempts. A group with fewer than two tokens or identical token values can still remain unchanged.
