What happens after you paste text
The output updates as you type or change the selected mode. Auto-detect checks the whole input for a valid percent escape, then chooses decoding when it finds one and encoding when it does not. The other modes apply the operation you choose to the complete input.
Choose a mode and read the output
- Paste a value into Input URL or text.
- Choose Auto-detect, Encode, or Decode.
- Choose Magic Un-Mess when the input is a URL and you want selected query parameters removed.
- Read the result under Output text.
- Use Copy or Download to copy or save the result.
How Auto-detect decides
Auto-detect looks anywhere in the input for a percent sign followed by two hexadecimal characters. One match makes it decode the entire value. With no match, it encodes the entire value, so a plain space becomes %20 and an ampersand becomes %26.
hello world & more
hello%20world%20%26%20more
How Encode and Decode treat a full URL
Encode treats the whole input as one component. That includes URL punctuation, so the colon and slashes in a full address are escaped along with the path. Decode converts valid percent escapes throughout the input.
https://example.com/a path
https%3A%2F%2Fexample.com%2Fa%20path
An incomplete or invalid escape, such as bad%2, makes Decode clear Output text and show an error. Correct the input before copying the result.
What Magic Un-Mess removes
Magic Un-Mess parses the input as a URL and removes matching query-parameter names. It removes names beginning with utm_, along with names such as gclid, fbclid, msclkid, ref, and campaignid. Other query parameters stay in the result.
https://example.com/page?utm_source=newsletter&ref=mail&topic=urls
https://example.com/page?topic=urls
Name matching ignores letter case. The input must be accepted by the URL parser; an invalid URL leaves Output text blank. Review the remaining query string before sharing it, because a removed parameter can carry attribution or destination-specific data.
When each mode is useful
Use Encode when a text field needs spaces and reserved characters written as percent escapes. The result represents the full value as one encoded component.
Use Magic Un-Mess on a copied campaign URL to remove the tracking names listed above. Check the parameters that remain.
Use Decode when a log or document contains escaped characters and you need to read the original text before choosing which form to keep.
Which text tool fits the job
Use this page for percent-encoding, percent-decoding, or removing the tracking query names listed above. The Text Transformation Tools category is a starting point for other text changes. Choose HTML Entity Encoder / Decoder for HTML entity references, Mojibake Fixer for text damaged by a wrong character-encoding interpretation, or Find and Replace Text for literal or regular-expression replacements.
Questions about encoding and Magic Un-Mess
How do I encode a URL with this tool?
Paste the URL or text into Input URL or text, then choose Encode. The entire input is returned with component characters percent-encoded, including URL punctuation.
How do I decode a URL with percent escapes?
Paste the encoded value and choose Decode. Valid percent escapes are converted throughout the input, while an invalid or incomplete escape clears the output and shows an error.
What does Magic Un-Mess remove from a URL?
Magic Un-Mess removes query names beginning with utm_ and the listed tracking names, including gclid, fbclid, msclkid, and ref. Other query parameters remain in the result.
Why is the output blank after Decode or Magic Un-Mess?
The output is blank when Decode rejects an invalid percent escape or Magic Un-Mess cannot parse the input as a URL. Correct the escape or provide a parseable URL, then review the result before copying it.
