How to calculate a test score percentage
Enter the number in Correct answers and the full count in Total questions. Select Calculate to see Test score percentage, Letter grade, and Questions missed. Edit the grading-scale rows before calculating when the test uses different cutoffs.
- Enter the number of correct responses in Correct answers.
- Enter the full question count in Total questions.
- Review the grading-scale rows and edit them when the test uses different cutoffs.
- Select Calculate, then review the result or select Copy result or Download result (.txt).
How the test score calculator assigns a letter grade
Reset to default scale loads A, B, C, D, and F rows with minimum percentages of 90, 80, 70, 60, and 0. Change a label or cutoff directly, add a blank row with Add row, or remove a row with Remove grading-scale row. Before the letter is chosen, the rows are sorted from the highest minimum percentage to the lowest. The first cutoff at or below the score supplies the label.
- Each row needs a label of up to four characters and a minimum percentage between 0 and 100.
- At least one grading-scale row must remain.
- A score below the lowest cutoff receives the last row's label. Keep a 0% row when every score needs coverage.
Changing an answer or grading-scale value hides the current result. Select Calculate again to update it. Reset clears both answer fields, restores the default rows, and hides the result.
Test score percentage formula and example
The calculator divides Correct answers by Total questions and multiplies by 100. It subtracts Correct answers from Total questions to get Questions missed. The percentage is displayed to two decimal places.
Correct answers: 34
Total questions: 40
Test score percentage: 85.00%
Letter grade: B
Questions missed: 6
Every question has equal weight. The calculation does not apply a curve, extra credit, dropped questions, or an instructor's rounding rule.
Test score calculator input rules
- Correct answers must be a whole number of 0 or more.
- Total questions must be a whole number greater than 0.
- Correct answers cannot exceed Total questions.
- A grading-scale row cannot have an empty label or empty minimum percentage. Its minimum must be between 0 and 100.
The result includes the entered counts, missed questions, percentage, letter grade, and formula. Its assumptions table shows the minimum percentage used for the selected letter. The complete grading-scale table is not included. Copy result puts the plain-text result on the clipboard. If automatic copying fails, the text is selected for manual copying. Download result (.txt) saves it as a text file.
Before recording the letter grade
Check the grading-scale rows before recording the displayed letter. The default rows use 90, 80, 70, 60, and 0 as their minimum percentages. The calculator uses the numbers and grading scale you enter; it does not read a school record, course gradebook, or testing system.
For a test with unequal point values, use a points-based calculation. This calculator uses question counts and gives every question the same weight.

Frequently asked questions
How do I calculate a test score from correct and total questions?
Divide Correct answers by Total questions and multiply by 100. The calculator subtracts Correct answers from Total questions to show Questions missed.
Can I change the test score grading scale?
Yes. Edit each label or minimum percentage, add a row with Add row, or remove a row with Remove grading-scale row. The calculator sorts the rows by minimum percentage before choosing the letter grade.
What happens if correct answers exceed total questions?
The calculator rejects the entry and shows an error. Correct answers must be no greater than Total questions.
Does the test score calculator handle questions with different point values?
No. It treats every question as equal-weighted, so tests with different point values need a points-based calculation.
