How to use Bonus After Tax Calculator

Enter a gross bonus and the withholding rates you want to model. Bonus After Tax Calculator adds the six rates, then shows the estimated after-tax bonus, total withheld, combined rate, formula, assumptions, and intermediate dollar values.

  1. Enter the bonus in Gross bonus amount ($).
  2. Review or edit Federal supplemental withholding rate (%), Social Security withholding rate (%), and Medicare withholding rate (%).
  3. Enter applicable values in State withholding rate (%, optional), Local / other withholding rate (%, optional), and Additional Medicare surtax rate (%, optional).
  4. Select Calculate to show the estimate, formula, and assumptions table.
  5. Select Copy result or Download result (.txt) to keep the plain-text result. Select Reset to clear the result and restore the default values for the required rates.

How the calculator calculates the estimate

The calculator adds the six rates and applies the combined percentage to the full gross bonus. It subtracts that withheld amount from the bonus. Blank optional fields count as 0%. With the default required rates, a $5,000 bonus produces this example:

Input: Gross bonus amount ($) = 5000
Rates: 22%, 6.2%, 1.45%; optional rates blank
Output: Combined withholding rate = 29.65%
        Total withheld = $1,482.50
        Estimated after-tax bonus = $3,517.50

The displayed formula is Withholding amount = Bonus x (Total withholding rate / 100), followed by After-tax bonus = Bonus - Withholding amount. The result lists every rate, the combined rate, and the two dollar amounts used in the calculation.

What rates and amounts are valid

Federal supplemental withholding rate (%), Social Security withholding rate (%), and Medicare withholding rate (%) start with editable values. The state, local or other, and Additional Medicare fields are optional. Each entered rate must be between 0 and 100, and the combined rate cannot exceed 100%.

Gross bonus amount ($) must be greater than 0. A validation error hides the previous result. Changing an input also hides the result until you select Calculate again. A blank optional rate appears as 0.00% in the result and downloaded text.

What the estimate leaves out

This calculation applies each entered rate to the full bonus. It does not calculate progressive tax brackets, aggregate withholding, wage-base limits reached during the year, benefit deductions, or final annual tax liability. The script uses the numbers you enter and does not fetch live tax tables, payroll records, or account data.

When to use the result

For a proposed $5,000 bonus, enter the amount and adjust the optional state or local rates. The result shows how those entries change the modeled withholding and amount left.

When checking an employer-provided figure, copy the formula, assumptions, and intermediate values into a note beside that figure.
