How each hour type affects gross pay
The multiplier applies to overtime hours. Regular hours use the base rate. Overtime hours use the base rate multiplied by Overtime multiplier (x).
Overtime hourly rate = base rate x multiplierRegular pay = base rate x regular hoursOvertime pay = overtime hourly rate x overtime hoursTotal gross pay = regular pay + overtime pay
Base hourly rate: $22.50
Overtime multiplier: 1.50x
Regular hours: 40.00
Overtime hours: 8.00
Overtime hourly rate: $33.75
Regular pay: $900.00
Overtime pay: $270.00
Total gross pay: $1,170.00
The result and downloaded text show money, hours, and multiplier values to two decimal places. The result also includes the formula, assumptions, and intermediate values.
What the overtime pay calculator checks and leaves out
Calculation stops when Base hourly rate ($/hour) is blank, invalid, or 0 or less. It also stops when Overtime multiplier (x) is blank, invalid, or below 1, or when either hours value is negative. Blank hours count as zero, and at least one of the hours fields must be greater than zero.
The result is gross pay before withholding, deductions, or other paycheck adjustments. The calculator uses one flat multiplier with the rate and hours you enter. It does not fetch wage records or timesheets, detect daily or weekly overtime thresholds, calculate a blended rate, or choose the rule for your job.
How to compare overtime settings and save the result
To compare time-and-a-half with double time, change Overtime multiplier (x) from 1.5 to 2, then click Calculate. A planned schedule can be checked by changing the hours and calculating again.

Overtime pay is the base hourly rate multiplied by the overtime multiplier and the overtime hours entered. Regular pay is the base rate multiplied by regular hours. Gross pay is the sum of both.
What overtime multiplier should I enter?
Enter the multiplier used by the pay policy or rule you are applying. The field starts at 1.5 and accepts values of 1 or greater.
Can I calculate overtime pay with no regular hours?
Yes. Leave Regular hours (this period) blank or enter zero, then enter a positive value for Overtime hours (this period).
Does the result include taxes or deductions?
No. The result is gross pay before tax withholding, benefit deductions, and other paycheck adjustments.
Does it use my timesheet or actual pay rate?
No. The calculator uses only the base rate, hours, and multiplier entered in its fields; it does not fetch wage records, timesheets, or payroll data.
