Cycling Calculator

Calculate cycling speed, distance, time, pace, target route splits, and estimated energy use from the numbers you enter, in metric or imperial units.

Choose what to solve for, then enter the other two values. Pace (time per unit distance) is always shown alongside the result.

Hours:minutes:seconds, or minutes:seconds.

How to use the Cycling Calculator

Use Speed / Distance / Time when two of the three values are known. It calculates the missing value and shows pace in the selected distance unit. Route Splits turns a target time into segment times, while Energy Estimate uses rider weight, ride duration, average speed, and a MET value.

  1. Choose Speed / Distance / Time, Route Splits, or Energy Estimate.
  2. In Speed / Distance / Time, set Calculate to Average speed, Time, or Distance, then fill in the other two fields.
  3. In Route Splits, enter Total distance and Target total time, then choose Equal segments or Custom segment distances.
  4. In Energy Estimate, enter Rider weight, Ride duration, and Average speed, then choose an Effort level (MET).
  5. Select Calculate to show the result, or select Reset to clear that section.

How to calculate cycling speed, time, or distance

Enter time as hours:minutes:seconds or minutes:seconds. With the values below, the calculator produces the listed pace:

Distance: 40 km
Time: 01:30:00
Average speed: 26.67 km/h
Pace: 2:15 min/km

The Calculate choice selects speed = distance ÷ time, time = distance ÷ speed, or distance = speed × time. The result shows the three related values, pace, and the formula row in the selected units.

How to plan cycling route splits

For Equal segments, enter Number of equal segments as a whole number from 2 through 100. For Custom segment distances, enter positive comma-separated values. Their sum must be within 2% of Total distance plus 0.01 distance units.

The calculator gives each segment a share of Target total time based on its distance. The result includes required average speed, each split time, cumulative distance, and cumulative time. Every split assumes one constant average speed.

Total distance: 100 km
Target total time: 04:00:00
Segment distances: 20, 30, 25, 25
Split times: 00:48:00, 01:12:00, 01:00:00, 01:00:00

How the cycling energy estimate works

Enter Rider weight, Ride duration, and Average speed. Auto (based on average speed) selects a displayed MET bracket. You can also choose a bracket in Effort level (MET). The calculation is MET × weight in kilograms × time in hours, and the result reports estimated kcal, kJ, the MET value, and kcal per hour.

The estimate uses speed, body weight, and duration. It does not calculate watts or adjust for wind, terrain, drafting, bike fit, aerodynamics, or individual fitness.

Cycling Calculator input limits and result files

Distance, speed, weight, and duration must be greater than zero. A three-part time must keep minutes and seconds below 60. A two-part value can use minutes:seconds, such as 90:00. Invalid values show a validation message and keep the result hidden.

Each tab has Copy result and Download result (.txt). The result text includes the calculated values and the assumptions used. Calculations run in the browser, and the script does not fetch route or performance data.

Examples of cycling calculator inputs

A ride recorded as 40 km in 01:30:00 can be entered to check Average speed and Pace. The example above returns 26.67 km/h and 2:15 min/km.

For a 100 km target, choose Custom segment distances, enter 20, 30, 25, and 25, then copy the split table for a pacing note.

When another sports calculator fits better

This page covers cycling speed, distance, time, route splits, and MET-based energy estimates in Sports Calculators. The Race Finish Time Calculator estimates a finish time from race distance and target pace or speed. The Heart Rate Zone Calculator calculates training zones from maximum heart rate, heart-rate reserve, or lactate threshold.

Frequently asked questions

Can the Cycling Calculator calculate average speed?

Yes. Set Calculate to Average speed, enter Distance and Time, and select Calculate. The result includes Average speed and Pace in the selected units.

How do I enter cycling time?

Enter time as hours:minutes:seconds or minutes:seconds, such as 01:30:00 or 90:00. The value must be greater than zero, and minutes and seconds stay below 60 when the hours field is present.

Does Route Splits account for hills or wind?

Route Splits divides Target total time by distance using a constant average speed. It does not change split times for hills, elevation, wind, stops, drafting, or fatigue.

Is the Cycling Calculator calorie estimate precise?

The energy result is a generic MET estimate based on Rider weight, Ride duration, and Average speed or a selected MET bracket. It does not come from a power-meter measurement or an individual physiological reading.
