PDF Metadata Editor

Read and edit a PDF's Document Info dictionary - Title, Author, Subject, Keywords, Creator, Producer, dates and any custom fields - plus the fields it can find in an embedded XMP metadata packet, directly in your browser. Clear or replace any detected value, then download the edited PDF along with a before-and-after change report. Visible pages, fonts, images and annotations are preserved exactly.

How to edit PDF metadata

Start with a .pdf file. PDF Metadata Editor reads the Document Info fields and any recognized XMP fields it finds, then lets you change the values that appear. When processing finishes, Edited PDF result lists the changed fields before and after. Download .pdf saves the edited file, and Download change report saves a plain-text record.

  1. Choose a file with Drop a .pdf file here or browse files.
  2. Review Document Info fields. Existing values appear when available. Custom Info fields and Detected XMP fields appear only when the PDF contains fields the editor recognizes.
  3. Edit Title, Author, Subject, Keywords, Creator application, Producer, Creation date (PDF date, e.g. D:20240115120000Z), Modification date (PDF date, e.g. D:20240115120000Z), or any displayed custom or XMP field.
  4. For an XMP list field, separate multiple values with ;.
  5. Use Download .pdf for the edited file or Download change report for the text report.

What PDF metadata fields can you edit

The standard Document Info fields are Title, Author, Subject, Keywords, Creator application, Producer, Creation date, and Modification date. A PDF can also expose custom Info fields. Detected XMP fields include XMP Title, XMP Description, XMP Creator(s), XMP Subjects/Keywords, XMP Producer, XMP Keywords, XMP Creator tool, XMP Create date, and XMP Modify date.

Clear a Document Info field to remove its entry from the Info dictionary. For example:

Title: PDF Metadata Editor
Cleared Title: field removed

Edited PDF result shows each changed field with its before and after value. Download change report creates a plain-text record. Download .pdf saves the edited PDF.

How to edit XMP metadata in a PDF

The editor reads an existing XMP metadata packet and displays only the recognized fields it finds. For XMP Creator(s) and XMP Subjects/Keywords, enter multiple values separated by ;. Clearing one empties its existing XML element or container. The editor does not create a new XMP packet or add a property it did not detect.

Which PDF files can this editor open

Select a file ending in .pdf with a %PDF- header. Malformed PDFs or PDFs with unsupported structures can fail during loading. When the PDF is encrypted, the editor warns you, disables editing, and does not decrypt it.

If the PDF appears to contain a digital signature field, the editor warns that a metadata change invalidates existing signatures. Historical metadata inside incremental-update history or embedded files is not guaranteed to be removed. The PDF is processed in your browser and is not uploaded by this tool. The page still loads its PDF library from jsDelivr.

Examples of metadata changes

Replace an old Title or Author value before sending a PDF to a client, then keep the change report with the edited file.

Clear Keywords by deleting its value. The editor removes that Document Info entry when it saves the PDF.

Change Creation date or Modification date using the PDF date format shown in each field label. The report records the old and new values.

When another PDF edit tool fits better

Choose PDF Edit Tools when you need a different kind of PDF change. Use PDF Page Editor for page deletion, reordering, rotation, cropping, page numbers, repeated headers or footers, AcroForm fields, annotations, bookmarks, or a signature image. Use Watermark PDF when the job is adding text or image watermarks with page range, position, scale, rotation, opacity, layer order, margins, or repeat settings.

Load a .pdf file with Drop a .pdf file here or browse files. Edit the displayed fields, then choose Download .pdf. Edited PDF result shows the fields that changed.
