Split PDF

Split a local PDF into multiple files by custom page ranges, every N pages, bookmarks (where the PDF has an outline), or one file per page. Preview the split boundaries directly on the page thumbnails, review predictably named output files before building, and download everything as a single ZIP.

How to split a PDF

Choose one .pdf file, select a split mode, and inspect the page thumbnails and output filenames before you click Download. Split PDF copies selected pages into new PDF files in the browser. The original file object stays unchanged, and the selected PDF is not sent to a server.

How to use Split PDF

  1. Drop a .pdf file on Drop a .pdf file here, or click browse files.
  2. Choose Page ranges, Every N pages, Bookmarks, or One file per page.
  3. Enter the setting for that mode. For Bookmarks, review the detected top-level entries and the page targets.
  4. Check Output files and the page thumbnails to confirm the boundaries and filenames.
  5. Click Download after the output is built. One file downloads as a .pdf; multiple files download as a .zip.

How to split a PDF by page ranges

In Page ranges (each group becomes its own output file), enter comma-separated groups. A single number creates a one-page file. A dash range creates a multi-page file.

Page ranges: 1-3, 4-6, 10
Output: pages 1-3, pages 4-6, page 10

Reversed ranges are reordered, and range endpoints are clipped to the document's page count. Malformed groups and invalid single values are ignored. Overlapping or duplicate groups remain separate. Pages outside every valid group are marked Skipped.

How to split a PDF every N pages

Choose Every N pages and set Pages per file to divide the document sequentially. Values below 1 use 1, and the last file keeps any remaining pages.

Pages per file: 3
10-page PDF: 1-3, 4-6, 7-9, 10

The page thumbnails mark each boundary before the files are built. Choose One file per page when every page should become its own PDF.

How to split a PDF by bookmarks

Bookmarks uses readable top-level entries in the PDF outline as split points. Each entry starts a file that ends before the next entry or at the document end. Nested sub-bookmarks do not create separate files. Select Keep pages before the first bookmark as their own file to include opening pages before the first entry.

Unresolvable destinations are skipped. When multiple bookmarks point to one page, the first entry is kept. Bookmarks is unavailable when the PDF has no usable top-level entries.

What Split PDF preserves and rejects

Pages are copied with their dimensions, rotation, and visible content preserved. Split PDF does not extract text or merge pages. Encrypted or password-protected PDFs are detected and blocked because the tool does not decrypt them.

A detected digital signature produces a warning. Splitting can continue, but newly saved PDFs will not retain verifiable cryptographic signatures. Structurally unusual PDFs can continue after a parser warning; a file that cannot be parsed stops the workflow.

Examples with page ranges and bookmarks

For a file named report.pdf, enter 1-3, 4-6 in Page ranges to create two outputs, then check the two boundaries and the Output files list before Download.

For a PDF with chapter entries, choose Bookmarks and review the listed targets. Choose One file per page when each source page needs its own output.

When to use Split PDF

Use PDF Split Tools to compare the PDF splitting tools in this category. Choose Split PDF for page ranges, sequential groups, top-level bookmarks, or one file per page, with the boundary preview and Output files list on the same page.

Frequently asked questions

How do I split a PDF into selected pages?

Enter comma-separated page groups in Page ranges (each group becomes its own output file). Use 1-3, 4-6, 10 to create separate outputs for those groups.

Can I split a PDF every N pages?

Yes. Choose Every N pages and set Pages per file. Split PDF creates sequential groups and puts any remaining pages in the last file.

Can I split a PDF by bookmarks?

Yes, when the PDF has readable top-level bookmarks. Nested bookmarks are not used as separate split points. The mode is unavailable when no usable top-level entries are found.

Does Split PDF upload or change my original file?

No. Split PDF reads, copies, and packages the PDF in the browser, while the original file object stays unchanged. Click Download to save the new PDF or ZIP files.

Can Split PDF open a password-protected PDF?

No. Split PDF detects encrypted or password-protected PDFs and disables splitting because it does not decrypt them.
