Remove Accents / Diacritics

Convert accented characters (é, ü, ç) to plain ASCII (e, u, c).

How to remove accents from text

Paste text into the input area or choose Upload for a text file. The page applies Unicode NFD normalization, removes combining marks, and can replace the listed ligatures. The result appears in the area marked "Accent-free output will appear here..." while you type. Copy or Download it when the text is ready.

Use Remove Accents / Diacritics

  1. Paste or type text into the area with the placeholder "Paste or upload text with accents...".
  2. Choose Upload and select a .txt, .csv, .log, or .md text file.
  3. Keep Fix common ligatures checked, or clear it before reviewing the result.
  4. Read the result in the area marked "Accent-free output will appear here...", then choose Copy or Download.

How to remove diacritics from text

The conversion first applies NFD normalization. It then removes characters in the combining diacritical mark range. Other letters, spaces, numbers, punctuation, and line breaks remain in place unless one of the mapped ligatures changes.

café naïve
Zürich, résumé

The result is:

cafe naive
Zurich, resume

What Fix common ligatures changes

Fix common ligatures starts checked. When it stays checked, the code replaces Æ with AE, æ with ae, Œ with OE, œ with oe, ß with ss, Ð with D, ð with d, Þ with Th, þ with th, Ł with L, and ł with l. Clear the checkbox to skip these replacements while accent removal continues.

Æsir, Straße, Þing, Łódź

With the checkbox selected, the result is:

AEsir, Strasse, Thing, Lodz

What the text remover leaves unchanged

Remove Accents / Diacritics has no separate rules for punctuation, numbers, spaces, line breaks, or emoji. Those characters stay as entered. Characters that are neither combining marks nor listed ligatures can remain non-ASCII.

Processing stays in the browser as you type or change the checkbox. The page scripts make no request carrying the entered text to a server. Check the result before using it elsewhere.

Where this comes up

Paste a name such as Zoë and the result is Zoe. You can then copy the converted text into another field.

For a longer list, upload the text file, inspect the converted city names, and copy the lines you need.

When another text cleanup tool fits better

Choose Text Cleanup & Filter Tools for related text changes. Choose Remove BOM for a leading UTF-8 Byte Order Mark. Choose Remove Special Characters for controls over spaces, newlines, numbers, or extra characters. Choose Remove Non-Printable Characters when you need to remove non-printable characters while keeping tabs or newlines.
