How to wrap text to a chosen width
Paste text into Input text or load a file with Upload. Text Wrapper writes the result into a read-only output using the selected Column width. Choose Soft wrap (word boundary) to keep words together where they fit, or Hard wrap (exact character limit) to split the text at the selected count.
How to use the Text Wrapper
- Paste text into
Input text, or selectUploadto load a text file. - Set
Column widthto a value from40to200. - Choose
Soft wrap (word boundary)orHard wrap (exact character limit). - Keep
Preserve paragraph breaksselected to keep blank-line-separated blocks apart, or clear it to wrap the input as one block. - Select
Show visual rulerfor a guide above the output, then useCopyorDownload.
How Soft wrap and Hard wrap change line length
Soft wrap (word boundary) puts as many complete words as fit on each line. A word longer than the selected width stays intact, so that line can exceed the width. Hard wrap (exact character limit) cuts normalized text into chunks at the selected character count, including inside words.

How to wrap text to 80 columns
Column width starts at 80. Leave it there for an 80-column result, or change the slider to another value. Select Show visual ruler to place a guide above the output; the guide follows the selected width and marks each tenth column.
What happens to spaces and paragraph breaks?
Text Wrapper changes runs of whitespace into single spaces and removes leading and trailing whitespace inside each wrapped block. A single line break becomes a space. With Preserve paragraph breaks selected, blank-line-separated blocks stay separated by one blank line; with it cleared, the input is wrapped as one block. Whitespace-only input produces no output.
Upload accepts files marked as .txt, .csv, .log, .md, or text/plain. The output section appears only when the wrapped result contains text.
Where text wrapping comes up
- A README author can paste a long paragraph, set
Column widthto80, and copy the wrapped lines into the document. - A developer can wrap a code comment at a chosen width, then select
Downloadto save the read-only output. - Someone preparing terminal output or an email can keep paragraph breaks, choose
Soft wrap (word boundary), and paste the result where fixed-width lines are useful.
When another text formatter fits better
Use Text Formatting & Layout Tools to compare text-formatting tasks. Choose Indent Text for adding or removing indentation, converting tabs and spaces, or applying Hanging Indent or Smart Auto-Format. Choose Text Aligner for left, center, right, or justified alignment, or for Char Padding around a chosen character string. Choose Add Prefix & Suffix when each line needs custom text before or after it, with empty or whitespace-only lines left unchanged when that option is selected.
Frequently asked questions
How do I wrap text to 80 columns?
Set Column width to 80 and choose Soft wrap (word boundary) or Hard wrap (exact character limit). Soft wrap keeps complete words together where they fit. Hard wrap cuts at the selected character count.
What is the difference between Soft wrap and Hard wrap?
Soft wrap (word boundary) breaks before a word when that word would pass the selected width, while Hard wrap (exact character limit) splits the normalized text at exact character counts.
Can Text Wrapper preserve paragraph breaks?
Keep Preserve paragraph breaks selected to keep blank-line-separated input blocks separate. Single line breaks inside each block become spaces before wrapping.
What file types can I upload for text wrapping?
Upload accepts .txt, .csv, .log, .md, and text/plain files. The markup does not specify a maximum file size or encoding behavior.
Will a long word stay on one line?
With Soft wrap (word boundary), a word longer than the selected width stays unbroken and can exceed that width. Hard wrap (exact character limit) can split the word.
