How to use the Writing Prompt Generator
Generate writing prompts with the controls
- Choose values in Genre, Theme, Setting, Character, Point of View, and Format.
- Set Audience, Difficulty, and Length to set the reader, writing challenge, and target size.
- Select Quantity as 1, 5, 10, or 20. Enter a value in Seed (optional) when you want to reproduce the batch.
- Change a setting and wait for the generated prompts to update.
- Use the copy icon on one result, or choose Copy All, Download TXT, or Download CSV for the batch.
What each selection changes
Genre, Theme, Setting, Character, Point of View, and Format each include Any / Surprise Me. That leaves the selected story ingredient open while the generator chooses a value. Audience, Difficulty, and Length use defined choices. Each result shows its genre, format, and difficulty, followed by the task and its constraints.
Genre: Mystery | Theme: Discovery | Setting: A Small Coastal Town
Character: A Retired Spy | Point of View: First Person | Format: Short Story
Seed (optional): story42
Output: Write a short story in first person about a retired spy who uncovers a secret that changes everything they believed to be true, set in a small coastal town. Along the way, a witness changes their story overnight.
What Seed (optional) changes
The field is trimmed before use. A nonblank seed with the same controls produces the same batch under the current code. A blank field uses Math.random, so the next batch can differ. The output is a prompt with a task and constraints for you to develop.
Why a batch can contain fewer prompts
The batch builder skips duplicate task text and makes up to 60 attempts for each requested prompt. Fixed choices can exhaust the available task variations before the builder reaches Quantity. The result count can then be lower than the selected 1, 5, 10, or 20.
Use fixed choices for a starting problem
Set Genre to Mystery, Theme to Discovery, Setting to A Small Coastal Town, Character to A Retired Spy, Point of View to First Person, and Format to Short Story. The resulting task gives a draft a defined problem to develop.
For a classroom exercise, choose Young Adult, Beginner, and Short with a genre and setting. For repeated sessions, keep the controls unchanged and record Seed (optional) so the same batch can be generated again.
When another text generator fits better
Writing Prompt Generator is part of Text Generation Tools. Use it for an open-ended task you will expand into your own work. Choose Random Quote Generator for quote-style lines, Random Text Generator for random words, sentences, or paragraphs, or Lorem Ipsum Generator for placeholder copy.
Frequently asked questions
How do I generate writing prompts?
Choose the story controls, set Quantity, and review the prompts after the selections change.
Can I make creative writing prompts for a specific genre?
Yes. Choose a value in Genre, then combine it with Theme, Setting, Character, Point of View, and Format.
Can the generator write a full story?
It returns an actionable task or premise with constraints for you to develop.
Can I repeat the same story prompt batch?
Yes. Enter the same nonblank value in Seed (optional) and keep the other controls unchanged to reproduce the batch under the current code.
Why did I get fewer prompts than Quantity?
You can get fewer when the selected combinations produce duplicate task text before the builder reaches the requested quantity.
