How to use the NATO Phonetic Alphabet Translator
Paste a callsign, word, or sentence into the input area. The NATO Phonetic Alphabet Translator shows a NATO/ICAO code word for each ASCII letter, while spaces, punctuation, digits, and other characters stay in the output. You can then select Read Aloud, Copy, or Quiz Mode.
Convert letters to NATO code words
- Type or paste text into the input area.
- Review the NATO output after entering at least one non-whitespace character.
- Select Read Aloud to hear the output, or select Copy to copy it to the clipboard.
Uppercase and lowercase A-Z use the same mapping. The translator adds spaces between code words for adjacent letters, and leaves existing non-letter characters where they are. If the input contains only whitespace, the NATO output section stays hidden. If the browser cannot provide Read Aloud or Copy, the corresponding control is disabled and the page tells you to select the output manually.
What the NATO Phonetic Alphabet Translator changes
Each ASCII letter receives its code word. A becomes Alpha, B becomes Bravo, and Z becomes Zulu. Spaces, line breaks, digits, punctuation, and non-ASCII letters keep their original characters.
MAYDAY-12
Mike Alpha Yankee Delta Alpha Yankee-12
How Quiz Mode checks NATO answers
Select Quiz Mode to open a prompt for a randomly selected letter. Enter the code word or the letter in Answer, then select Submit. Quiz Mode trims surrounding spaces and ignores letter case before checking the response. An empty answer shows feedback without changing the score. Each submitted answer updates the score and opens another prompt. Select Stop Quiz to close the panel; starting Quiz Mode again resets the score.
