Background Remover

Remove a solid or plain-color background and export it transparent, white, or a custom color - everything runs locally in your browser, nothing is uploaded.

How to remove a background from an image

Add an image with a solid or plain-color background. Background Remover compares each pixel with a background color taken from four corners or sampled from the Before image, then creates a PNG with a transparent, white, or custom-color background. Tolerance, Edge softness, Edge shrink/grow, and Smooth edges change the cutout before you review it in Before and After.

Use the background remover

  1. Drop images into Drop images here, or choose browse files.
  2. Keep Auto-detect corners selected, or choose Pick a color and click the background in the Before image.
  3. Adjust Tolerance, Edge softness, Edge shrink/grow, and Smooth edges.
  4. Choose Transparent, White, or a custom output background color.
  5. Review Before and After. When several images are loaded, select Download all as ZIP to collect the PNG results.

What Tolerance and Edge softness change

Tolerance controls how far a pixel's color can be from the sampled background and still be removed. Edge softness makes the transition at that color boundary more gradual. Edge shrink/grow moves the mask boundary between -10 and +10 pixels, while Smooth edges applies a smoothing pass.

Input: portrait.jpg
Settings: Tolerance 35%, Edge softness 25%, Edge shrink/grow +0 px
Output: portrait-background-removed.png

The output is always a PNG. Transparent leaves the removed area clear. White fills it with white. A custom color uses the color selected in Custom output background color.

Auto-detect corners or pick a color

Auto-detect corners samples four points near the image corners and uses their average color as the background reference. Choose Pick a color when the corners do not show the backdrop. Click the background in Before, and the next result uses that pixel color.

The color comparison applies across the image. A matching color inside the subject or elsewhere in the frame can also be removed. Because the comparison uses color values across the image, busy or textured scenes can have matching colors removed.

What files and downloads are supported

Drop images here accepts JPG, PNG, WEBP, GIF, and BMP files. Files with other filename extensions are ignored when they are added. Each processed image can be downloaded as a PNG, and Download all as ZIP collects the processed PNG files in one archive.

Detection, cutout, and export run locally through the Canvas API. The processing code makes no request containing the selected image files, so the image data stays in the browser while Background Remover works.

When these controls fit the image

  • Use Transparent when the removed area should stay clear around a product photo or logo.
  • Use Pick a color when the background is missing from the corner samples, then click it in Before.
  • Add several compatible images together when you want their PNG results in one ZIP archive.

When another image edit tool fits better

Use Image Edit Tools when you are choosing between several kinds of image changes. Choose Image Cropper when the unwanted area can be removed by a crop or aspect-ratio selection. Use Image Effects Editor for blur, pixelation, color adjustments, borders, padding, or shadows. Choose Image Resizer when the task is changing pixel dimensions or fitting an image to a preset.

Frequently asked questions

How do I remove a background from a JPG?

Add the JPG through Drop images here or browse files. Keep Auto-detect corners selected, or choose Pick a color and click the background in Before. The result downloads as a PNG.

Can Background Remover handle a busy photo?

Background Remover compares pixel colors, so it works best with a solid or plain-color background. Similar colors in a busy or textured scene can also be removed.

What does Edge shrink/grow do?

Edge shrink/grow moves the cutout boundary within a range of -10 to +10 pixels. Adjust it when the color boundary needs to move inward or outward around the subject.

Are images uploaded when I use Background Remover?

No. The page processes selected images locally in the browser with the Canvas API, and its processing code does not send the image files to a server.
