How to use a vertical text converter
Enter text, then choose By Character or By Word. By Character puts each character on its own line. By Word puts each non-empty word on its own line. The other controls change spaces, order, and line breaks.
Convert text into vertical lines
- Type or paste text into Input text, or choose Upload to select a text file.
- Select By Character or By Word.
- Set Skip spaces, Reverse order, or Keep separate lines as blocks.
- Read the result in Vertical text output as the text or settings change.
- Choose Copy or Download when the output is ready.
Stack text by character or word
By Character reads each line one character at a time. Skip spaces removes regular space characters. It does not remove tabs or other whitespace in this mode.
Input: CAT
Output:
C
A
T
By Word splits at one or more whitespace characters and leaves empty pieces out. Repeated spaces therefore do not create blank output lines.
Input: red blue
Output:
red
blue
Reverse vertical text and keep line blocks
Reverse order reverses the characters or words after the line has been split. When Keep separate lines as blocks is checked, the tool converts each input line separately and places a blank line between the resulting blocks. Reverse order then works inside each block.
Clear Keep separate lines as blocks to join the input before conversion. Line breaks are removed in By Character mode. In By Word mode, they become spaces.
What the vertical text converter reads
The conversion runs when the input or an option changes. An empty Input text produces empty output. Upload accepts the file types listed by the control: .txt, .csv, .log, .md, and text/plain.
Line endings split the input into separate lines when Keep separate lines as blocks is checked. With that option cleared, the tool removes those line endings for By Character or replaces them with spaces for By Word.
Where vertical text conversion comes up
- Stack a short label such as
CATto inspect a narrow sign or column layout. - Put each word of a heading on its own line before moving it into a text-based layout.
- Reverse characters or words in a sample string while checking a column-oriented display.
Choose another text formatting tool when needed
Use Text Formatting & Layout Tools for other text layout tasks. Text Aligner handles left, center, right, or justified text. Text Wrapper wraps text to a chosen width. Add Prefix & Suffix adds custom text before or after each line.
Frequently asked questions
How do I make text vertical online?
Enter text in Input text, choose By Character or By Word, and read the stacked result in Vertical text output. Use Copy or Download after the output appears.
Can I stack text by word instead of by letter?
Select By Word. Each non-empty word separated by whitespace is placed on its own line.
How do I reverse vertically stacked text?
Check Reverse order. With Keep separate lines as blocks checked, each input line reverses separately. With it cleared, the flattened input reverses as one sequence.
What happens to line breaks in vertical text?
Keep separate lines as blocks converts each input line separately and puts a blank line between blocks. Clear it to remove line breaks in By Character mode or turn them into spaces in By Word mode.
