How to edit animated GIF files
Load an animation to inspect its frames, remove selected frames, split at a cut point, and set playback behavior before downloading a new file. The tool accepts GIF, animated WebP, APNG, and PNG files. It reads the selected file in the browser, then creates the export there.
How to edit an animated GIF
- Drop a GIF, animated WebP, APNG, or PNG file onto the tool, or click
browse files. - Review the format, dimensions, frame count, total duration, and frame timeline.
- Select a frame, shift-click for a range, or ctrl/cmd-click to add or remove individual frames.
- Click
Delete selectedto remove frames, orSplit before first selectedto make two clips. - Change
Playback speed, toggleReverseorBoomerang, and chooseInfiniteorFixedunderLoop count. - Check the sequence with
Play,Step back, orStep forward, then select an export control.
Edit animated WebP and APNG frames
Each timeline thumbnail shows a frame index and its delay in milliseconds. The delay is displayed for reference. You change timing for the whole sequence with Playback speed, which accepts 0.25x through 4x; preset buttons set 0.5x, 1x, 2x, or 4x.
A static PNG appears as PNG (not animated) with one frame. Delete selected refuses an attempt to remove every frame. For Split before first selected, select a frame after the first one. The tool then creates Before and After clips.
Input: frame 0, frame 1, frame 2, frame 3
Action: select frame 2, then Split before first selected
Output: Before = frames 0-1; After = frames 2-3
GIF frame editor export options
Reverse reverses the current sequence. Boomerang appends the middle frames in reverse, so playback returns toward the first frame. Choose Infinite or Fixed under Loop count. The fixed count accepts values from 1 through 999. Restore previous timeline restores the previous delete or order change.
Export as GIF and Export as APNG create animated downloads. Export frames as ZIP puts the frames into individual PNG files, without the animation timing. After a split, use Download "Before" as GIF or Download "After" as GIF. Animated WebP input can be edited, then exported as GIF, APNG, or a ZIP of PNG frames.
GIF export reduces colors to a 256-color palette, and the tool warns when a frame has more than 256 colors. APNG export preserves transparency. GIF export supports fully transparent or fully opaque pixels and may flatten partial transparency.
Use the frame timeline for these edits
Remove a hold frame by selecting its thumbnail and clicking Delete selected. The timeline keeps the remaining frames in their current order.
To make two clips, select the first frame of the second clip and click Split before first selected. Continue with either clip or download each split as a GIF.
For an animation with transparency, read the warning before choosing GIF or APNG export. APNG keeps the alpha channel; GIF can flatten partially transparent pixels.
Choose a still-image editor for stills
For a still image, browse the Image Edit Tools category. Image Cropper handles a single-image crop, while Aspect Ratio Checker checks or crops to a preset or free-form ratio. Image Effects Editor applies blur, pixelation, color adjustments, borders, padding, rounded corners, and shadows.
Frequently asked questions
Can I edit an animated WebP file?
Yes. The tool decodes and edits animated WebP frames. Export as GIF, APNG, or a ZIP of PNG frames; animated WebP is not an export format here.
How do I remove frames from a GIF?
Select one or more thumbnails in the frame timeline, then click Delete selected. The tool keeps one frame when every frame is selected.
What is the difference between GIF and APNG export?
APNG export preserves transparency. GIF output reduces colors to a 256-color palette and can flatten partially transparent pixels. The tool displays warnings for those GIF conditions.
Are animated images uploaded for editing?
No. The selected file is decoded, edited, encoded, and downloaded locally in your browser. The page code does not send the file in a network request.
Why can I preview a GIF but not edit it?
Frame editing requires WebCodecs ImageDecoder. If it is unavailable, the tool shows a preview and disables editing, playback controls, and export.
